Bracing for a post-encampment winter — West End Phoenix
Following new provincial and municipal legislation, the city evicted residents tenting in Dufferin Grove Park. But there’s still no real plan for the winter ahead.
"Housing advocates question why the municipal government is spending on policing and evictions, rather than increasing the number of affordable housing options throughout the city"

A photo of Mike speaking into a megaphone in the middle of a crowd outside of Queen's Park.
Bill 33 is an attack on public education.
We know what would help students: smaller class sizes, more supports and better funding.
Instead the Ford government is attacking teachers and trustees.
We'll keep fighting back.

Weston Tenants Win Right to Face Top Renovictor Landlord
A provisional order from the Landlord-Tenant Board means that landlord Michael Klein, who is known to renters across Ontario, will have to either appear to defend himself or have tenants’ claims…
A group of Toronto tenants raised the alarm over a landlord with a long history of bad faith "renovictions" in apartment complexes across Ontario
Now, a provisional order from the LTB means he'll have to appear in court if he wants to defend himself.

The image is a graphic divided into three vertical sections, each with a different background color: orange on the left, dark blue in the center, and black on the right. At the top, a purple section with white text reads "This Week, Ontario will begin passing:" with yellow triangular warning icons on either side. The left section, with an orange background, contains black text about Bill 25. The central section has a dark blue background with multicolored text about Bill 60. The right section, with a black background, features white text about Bill 33.
This week is another tough one as the Ontario Government wages war on the working class as the government moves to pass: Bill 25—which will give the MCCSS Minister the power to make political directives for social service agencies.

My good friend Jess reading out names of innocent ppl who have a lost their lives to road violence.
Candles represent lives lost.
It’s so wrong when our elected reps place the convenience of drivers over prioritizing the safety of vulnerable road users.

🦆In the 1970s, Guelph leaders and the GRCA bought the former Frank Kortright Waterfowl Park lands to protect them forever as parkland. In June 2024, the GRCA approved a plan to sell 20 acres, betraying that original vision and the public investment behind it.

Toronto city hall agrees to fly Palestinian flag this month for the first time
The move by the city comes in the wake of Canada’s recognition of Palestine in September.
@guelph.ca should do the same. For a city that loves to call itself progressive, there needs to be more solidarity towards victims of genocide +their families. Market square was blue and white in support of Israel and @camguthrie.bsky.social posed with an Israeli flag on social media. #freepalestine

Landlords want your rent to go up. Doug Ford is making it happen
Ford may think that disappearing tenants and their unions from the LTB will disappear them from the city, but it won’t. Tenants and the growing tenant union movement in Ontario have been successfully ...
Doug Ford’s new housing bill has been sold as efficiency reform, yet it prioritizes landlords over tenants. Long-term renters will face faster evictions, fewer protections, and higher rents while corporate landlords consolidate even more control of an already deeply financialized market.

Thank you to all supporters of the #vacanthomestax and #Renoviction bylaws. Both passed unanimously by committee of the whole and are set to be implemented in 2026. We are pleased that the VHT was approved at 4%, as we had advocated for. Way to go #guelph!

It's obvious that Ford and Sakaria are using bike lanes to divide Ontarians & distract from some pretty monumental f-ups in Ontario. Instead of uniting us & using his mandate to build a better province, he's playing politics with peoples lives (of course not just people on bikes).

Text of table from newly proposed legislation. The heading says "Fighting Delays at the Landlord and Tenant Board." The bottom right box says the "Future State" of "Lease Agreement Expiry" would be "The government would consult on alternative option on lease agreement expiry that could allow landlords to control who occupies their units and for how long, allowing them to adjust tenancy agreements based on market conditions, personal needs, or business strategies. This would add flexibility for some landlords in the approach to leases, potentially unlocking additional rental unit stock."
Doug Ford's conservative government is proposing the the biggest attack on Ontario renters and rental affordability in a generation.
Not only would landlords be able to evict tenants without cause, but rent control in units built before 2018 would effectively be over. (See last row in the image.)

There's a lot to be said about Ford's proposal to allow no fault evictions, effectively ending rent control, but I just keep thinking about how I know *lawyers* who can only afford to live in Toronto because of the current RTA law. I don't know what kind of city we would become.

Ontario bill would look at ‘alternative options’ for ending residential leases, scrap Toronto green roof bylaw. Here are the highlights
The Ford government has tabled an omnibus bill that would make changes to a whole suite of laws and regulations, from green roofs to tenant evictions and driver’s licences.
Doug Ford is trying to pass a bill which would allow landlords to arbitrarily end lease agreements due to “personal needs, business strategies, or market conditions.” How about the “personal needs” of tenants to remain housed in an already hellish rental market? This is terrifying. #ONpoli #housing
