Remember this one? “Humans aren’t very efficient movers—until you put us on a bicycle, when we become some of the most energy-efficient land travelers in the animal kingdom.” Via Scientific American @sciam.bsky.social #CityMakingMath
Yes, adapting to climate change is going to be expensive, which is why we should reconsider spending money on projects like this that masquerade as solutions but actually exacerbate the problem.
Since private cars are a significant contributor to sea level rise, spending all this money to accommodate more cars is probably not the correct solution.
Pritzker: The reckoning is here. And now that this culture of timidity is on display, these same do-nothing Democrats want to blame our losses on the defense of Black people, trans kids, and immigrants, instead of on their own lack of guts and gumption.
Holy shit. @calmatters.org looked at all records of people who’ve killed peoples behind the wheel — and found a horrifying CA DMV scandal. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social needs to call for an investigation.

And that's especially true when idiots like @gavinnewsom.bsky.social start a podcast and amplify conservative messaging because some Republican consultant told him to.
Republican ideas aren't more popular, they're just louder.
I've been saying for years that it doesn't matter what the Dems actually say, it won't break through in this media landscape.

Very few Dutch cyclists wear helmets. Yet theirs are among the safest streets on earth. Why?
They understand it’s more beneficial to calm motor traffic, build dedicated infrastructure, and nurture a culture of everyday cycling. Not force the most vulnerable users to armour up.

"The first guest on Gavin Newsom's podcast was Charlie Kirk" is more than enough for me to say "absolutely not" to any suggestion Newsom play any role in the future of the Democratic Party. People like him are the past, the failures, the ones who got us here.
OK, all. Here's the deal.
I need 69 of you to get a paid subscription to Law Dork today so that I can focus on writing, researching, and covering the courts and the Trump administration in this new era.
This is the next big goal for Law Dork, so, please, let's do this! www.lawdork.com
It would go a long way in addressing the climate crisis, the affordability crisis, the public health crisis, & the equity crisis.
It would improve traffic, save lives, reduce pollution & noise, improve livability & save public money.
Never let anyone tell you the solutions we need are too complex.
I’ve been thinking about how monumentally stupid the Elon video game cheating thing is and I think it comes back to this post
there aren’t a ton of people who work in cars, or rockets, or even software
but everyone - everyone! - understands cheating at video games
totally unnecessary self-own
Yes, exactly this. My review was that it stayed a little too true to the stage version, and I wanted the transition from foe to friend to be given more depth.
But I think the second half had some of the better moments, so I'm still hopeful for part two.
When you buy their gas, you enable and encourage them to keep it up and directly add to their profits. You can't blame companies for selling products that you keep willingly buying.
The only way to stop this is to reduce car dependence.
The Muni Monthly Pass now costs $1020 annually. A Residential Parking Pass (RPP) costs $190. Why is it 5 times cheaper to store an entire car curbside than to ride Muni?
Image of a press conference with two individuals at a table. On the left, a man in a suit looks serious, while on the right, a woman speaks into multiple microphones. Overlaid text reads: 'I CAN’T FIND A PLACE TO LIVE' on the left and 'ONCE I HAD TO PARK TWO DOORS DOWN' on the right, contrasting housing struggles with parking inconvenience.

Ok, but I still feel safer around these than human drivers.
I am 100% on board with prioritizing active and public transit over cars, but I also think we should prioritize AVs over human-driven rideshares or taxis. And eventually over private vehicles.
"Elon Musk outs himself as a Nazi sympathizer" actually was on my 2024 bingo card.
Driver alone in a car taking up huge space next to a packed city bus and tight pedestrian and bike space all filled with people complains “Damn those bike paths and bus lanes taking up all the space.”
This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.
Coverage is 100% focused on being sad for drivers who might get tickets but who else is looking forward to better visibility next year because of the new daylighting law in California? 🙋🏻♀️
“…disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…”

There are plenty of resources out there for parents to figure out what's represented in a show. Proactively erasing people is simply indulging those who have just that bigoted desire - "I don't want that type of person visible." Maybe the uncomfortable conversation with your kid is why you think so.
Anyone who bikes instead of drives for transportation should never feel guilty for having “expensive” bikes. Even a really nice cargo e-bike at ~$5,000 is a fraction of the cost of a new car and also costs way less to operate and maintain.
We should enjoy our little earthquake warning systems before they are eliminated for "government efficiency." Or before they're privatized with multiple subscription tiers that give you an earlier "premium" warning, or make you watch an ad before it tells you the magnitude.

the lesson of the election isn’t “we should give up on trans rights,” it’s that the GOP took an issue that negatively impacted almost no one and made it a headliner. why would it help to surrender on an issue if they can create a grievance from thin air?
