There was even some evidence of debate within the CIA to switch backing to Mossadegh, iirc. Not sure there were really any democratic options on the table.

Honestly, idk about this. Mossadegh dissolved parliament and assumed direct control of the military, then ignored the Constitutional authority of the Shah to remove him from power. Seems like democracy had already died before US intervention.
