Echo and the Bunnymen β Ian McCulloch leaves it to the crowd to sing these timelessly great songs
The frontman struggled to get through most of the bandβs choruses but that left space for Will Sergeantβs glorious psychedelic shapes and a supportive sing along

Dave Simpson has reviewed the Leeds show for the Guardian. McCulloch doesn't come out of it well.

Oh dear. Doesn't sound like it was quite a disaster on the scale of the Glasgow RCH shambles but it sounds like a very mixed bag. The band certainly seem to save the shows (even if they're not Les and Pete).

Two sets shows can work if either they're part of an album tour ( e.g. the Dream Syndicate doing a 21st century set plus reissued album plus encore) or like Belly did as part of a two hours show.
But 40 minutes seems really short.

And there's only one 21st century song played now. Even that dreadful song from a couple of years ago, that Mac so loved, seems to have been dropped.

I really stopped going when a) the new records were all dull, and b) he stopped singing for chunks of songs.
Setlists seem to be very predictable now, last week's shows don't appear to have varied much at all from the last time I saw them four years ago.

Well, I guess men of a certain age *could* need to be off stage after a certain time. But otherwise itβs an odd thing to do and itβs not like theyβre doing two one hour sets.

It was all a long time ago but I'm still disappointed in not remembering seeing some bands.
Very struck by the doors time - 9 pm on a Monday evening! (Which TBF was standard for club gigs). Yet I would have been at work the next day. I'm exhausted even thinking about it.

Curiously there's no Wolfhounds shows listed for 1990 on setlist.fm Had you maybe stopped by March?

Hi Dave @davidlancecallahan.bsky.social found this in my old tickets. So it looks like I had a Wolfhounds near miss in Edinburgh in 1990 (although that's not my writing!). Did you remember if you did other dates on that tour with the Chills?

GOOD NEWS. The vinyl and the CDs of βThis Could be Us, You, Or Anybody Elseβ have arrived and they look absolutely gorgeous. Also, it is Bandcamp Friday, and therefore the perfect time to preorder one of these now tangible beauties. So, please do that. xox

The cover of Throwing Muses debut album, whatever it was called.
In all the #5debutalbums8589 chat, been surprised that the Throwing Muses debut* hasnβt been mentioned. And of course it wasnβt released in the US at the time.
Will be in my 5 (if I remember to vote).
* Itβs usually called Throwing Muses but Iβm sure I read somewhere itβs officially Untitled.

Think if I could keep only three SY records they would be EVOL, Sister and DDN.
The post Dirty records cover some ground. I never really got on with Experimental Jet Set etc nor NYC Ghosts and Flowers but loved Nurse. Then Rather Ripped was probably as commercial as they ever got.

I looked because a lot of the Renascent releases are very rare. (And because I wanted to check when it came out). But that's not one of them!

Assuming the barrier to a comprehensive release was that Plenty was on Food while the rest was on RT
My favourite run was Plenty, Move Me, WWW and It Will Come.
The first album is great but these earlier records have magic in their grooves without being too fast like Hypnobeat Live is

There was the double BBC Sessions release on CD ten years ago but can't think of a vinyl release. Don't recall even a session being released on Strange Fruit.

I think if I had to describe their best body of work then I'd argue for the pre-Giant run of EPs, which have never properly been collected in their entirety.

Yeah it was all done by 10.02 which was about 7 minutes too late for me to get the 10.00 train!
And they were great but equally understand why you'd be in Glasgow.
