I've consumed art by plenty of horrible people, but they tend to be dead for the most part, or at least had some self-awareness. No sheep's clothing in evidence. But now Gaiman's entire career just looks like a long con to me. Deep cover.
My brain keeps scrambling for some kind of tell - like “he enjoyed writing women suffering too much” or “being so outspoken about feminism was a giveaway”.
But I guess that’s the whole point, isn’t it? There’s no way of telling who’s an abusive creep behind closed doors.
They’re banning TikTok not because it harvests data, the same way US social media does, but because they can’t influence it’s algorithm with congressional hearings or government contracts the way they do every other tech giant. That’s it.
I was wondering if this would arc up again. Realistically, the best case scenario is Gaiman never sticks his head above the parapet again, and while "retired in monied comfort" doesn't sound like much of a punishment, no longer being the dark prince of cosy fantasy will be a wound that never heals.
I can't even begin to get my head around this. It's not that I expect more of famous people, because I don't. I just expect more of people. Full stop, period, end of story.
