This graphic depicts a drawing of shark teeth and shares some information about the course, which takes place online on Wednesdays from 530p-8p EST and runs from 9/17-11/5. #sciart
This is a colored pencil drawing of an anglerfish on black paper.
This is a black-and-white pen drawing of a Rio Grande silvery minnow, labeled with its common name and its scientific name (Hybognathus amarus) as well as its average size (3.5” in length).
This is an infographic about the bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) and its dentition. Drawings show the whole animal, a ventral view of its mouth and gills, and its jawbones. Text reads as follows: The bowmouth guitarfish is a large demersal fish native to the warm waters of the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. These unique fish are unfortunately critically endangered, but they generally fare well in captivity and can be seen in aquariums around the world. Despite their elongated bodies, bowmouth guitarfish are rays. Adults may approach 9’ in length. They are armored for sally with ridges of bony thorns over their eyes and along their backs, and dappled with lighter spots. As with other rays, the guitarfish’s mouth, nose, and gills are positioned ventrally - on the underside of its head. Bowmouths feed on smaller seafloor dwellers: crustaceans, mollusks, and other fish. To accommodate this crunchy and well-armored diet, the bowmouth guitarfish’s teeth are modified into wavy bands of flat, blunt crushing plates.
hi all - this is a little last-minute, but since I’m back here on Bluesky I figured I’d share! tomorrow I start teaching an 8-week online course on fish anatomy for artists through the Lyme Art Association. if it fits into your schedule, please join me! lymeartassociation.org/online-class...
AHAHA i love that! god i miss that project.
hi everybody! long time no see! i have spent the past six months working on a project that i cannot disclose for at least a year. soon that will be over and i will be able to go back to making and sharing other illustrations! i missed you, bluesky!

DANGGGG THIS IS GORGEOUS
Art piece of a digital painting of a mint moth which has burgundy wings with gold highlights and black and gold on the under wings. Drawn in a symmetrical style, it is perched on almost abstract purple flowers with green leaves. Everything is drawn with shapes with black in between to emphasize pattern and form while being in no way realistic.
Fun little experiment in style for the first day of #MothMay. My take on a mint moth, which I had not heard of before, but have striking colors!

This is a small illustration of a marbled newt. It is a lizard like amphibian, green in color with black spots and bumps of various sizes and a vivid orange stripe along its back. #sciart
Remember when I said I needed to draw more newts? This marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) is small, but now I have the itch. I definitely need to add more amphibians to my repertoire!
This drawing was made with watercolor and colored pencil.
magnificent!

Art piece of a digital painting of a tan and brown wren perched on the end of a gray stick among red poppies and green grass.
I don't know how to express this in a way that makes sense but my art improved by leaps and bounds once I realized it is less about translating exactly what you see onto paper than it is about creating an illusion in the viewer's eye of what you are seeing (and there are tricks, just like in magic.)
Art.
This is a topographical map of the state of Colorado, with rivers, lakes, streams, reservoirs, and other bodies of water drawn in a deep teal blue. #sciart
Colorado hydrological map / graphite and digital / 2025
Here it is, folks - my first map is finished (for now)! This is a pretty comprehensive look at the various and sundry bodies of water crisscrossing my beautiful home state. This map will be part of an upcoming field guide project! Stay tuned 👀

Happy #fossilfriday! Here’s an assortment of shark teeth (fossil and contemporary) from my collection, accompanied by a small plastic tiger shark. I pulled the bull shark tooth off the seafloor myself!
This drawing was made with watercolor and colored pencil. #sciart
This is a simple black and white drawing of a friendly looking rat wearing an undergarment that looks extremely itchy. The caption reads: “Fig. 1. The underpant worn by the rat.”
i am not exaggerating when i tell you that i think abt this triumph of #sciart at least once a week.

It’s back to teaching tomorrow, but the semester will be over in a few weeks and maybe I’ll have more painting time.

Everyone deserves a chance to see and experience your wonderful works! The fact it bumps you up in search to add alt text to your images is just gravy on top - here’s a fellow scientist w/low vision breaking it down for you (with helpful links and tools)
Illustration of a singing female American Redstart on a bright sunny spring day. Her head is tipped back, beak open, while she is perched on a mottled brown branch. She is overall grayish on the body but has a patch of bright yellow at the side of the breast, and a black and yellow tail. Behind her are pale pastel well-lit dogwood flowers and soft green leaves.
I'm delighted to be able to share my latest artwork for the @songbirding.com podcast and audiobook series! Singing female American Redstart, because female birds definitely do sing and we're finally starting to pay attention. 🎨🪶 #SciArt #BirdArt 🧪
oh, that is the coolest! i’ve never been anywhere i could hunt for them myself - what a lovely memory. the megalodon tooth was a gift; i’ve drawn it a couple times - each time i’m mindblown by its size all over again, especially knowing there are larger ones out there. thanks for the repost :)
