Yes, agreed. He’s a political shapeshifter who will sell out marginalized groups if he thinks it will net him votes. It should be disqualifying for any candidate to compromise on anyone’s human rights.
My point is that, while I don’t fault Hasan for answering like he did, the main focus should be on Newsom’s (many) disqualifiers. Let’s talk about why he shouldn’t be nominated, rather than what we might hypothetically do if he is.
Hasan knows that, even if it wasn’t his intention to spark a side conversation over “blue no matter who.”
I don’t think we disagree? The point of declaring “I won’t vote for X if they’re nominated” is to signal to others in the larger left coalition that they shouldn’t support X in the primary, because they’ll struggle to get leftists and progressives to vote for them in the general.
Better yet, let’s not bother having this conversation at all! All Hasan is trying to do is rally support against Newsom. We don’t need to entertain hypotheticals about what might happen if Newsom gets the nomination, because it hasn’t happened (and hopefully, won’t).

They should, because here that’s what’s needed to serve and protect the public. But they won’t. The sad reality is that police won’t keep people safe from authoritarian violence. It’s not a function that the institution of policing is capable of.
None of that sounds realistic, does it? Leave aside how silly it seems to expect a law enforcement officer to intervene against another. Police don’t place themselves in situations where they can’t bring overwhelming force if their orders disobeyed.
When the ICE convoy reached its intended destination, maybe the police officer could ask any masked agents for identification. If ICE agents started breaking down a door or attempting to detain/arrest someone with no warrant, the police officer could demand to see a warrant or note lack of grounds.
Maybe the police officer could try pulling over and citing ICE drivers for traffic violations. Most likely the ICE agents would ignore the police officer’s instructions or cite some exigency.
