A carcass of a 4.70 m male juvenile minke whale washed up in the Netherlands. It was moved into the dunes to leave it for decomposition, to study the related ecological processes, and to gain management experience in leaving a whale carcass in place. Results in Frontiers. doi.org/10.3389/fmar....

Collected some blue mussels in the Wadden Sea today for use in a #MarineEcology student practical at Wageningen University later this week. We're going to look for parasites.

Last night, 22 November, was a wonderful evening in Rotterdam, awarding the 'Grote Maaskantprijs' by the mayor Carola Schouten. The prize is for design and (landscape) architecture and was awarded to the map makers of 'the Netherlands 2120' map and the movement that came from it. I'm proud!

Red-breasted Goose
This is a Red-breasted Goose, a rare visitor in the Netherlands. Today, I was lucky to find one inside a group of hundreds of Barnacle Geese.
Looking for suitable growth sites for Sabellaria spinulosa tubeworms, we found beautiful artificial hard substrate reefs in the Dutch Wadden Sea. But the real thing would be a biogenic reef!
