Honestly, this sounds like an inexperienced DM/group to me. The paladin was protecting his friend. If there was no legit way he could've known about the theft, I don't see how he could've been stripped by his god. Although, non-lethal combat is a thing for a reason...
I ran the same sandbox style game for 3 groups over 5 years. It was a completely different experience with hugely memorable events taking place at each table with little overlap. Absolutely loved it, want to run it a 4th time!

I'm not so sure about this take. After all, the only reason they're rich is because so many are poor. Kill off all the poor, and who will make the iPhones and clean their mansions? They must realize this. They can't be rich without the poor.
I've found that I need to make the choice to take the path untraveled. I've got a driver friend who does everything possible to stay on the roads he knows. It's fairly easy to stay within what you know. You need to choose to step outside your known/safe areas.
