(My new bluesky name is based on one of these new bands: 100 Proof Aged in Soul, which is *just* the best band name of all time)

(FYI generally people refer to outsider Black music from the late 50s to mid-ish 70s as "soul folk" but its not quite soul mixed with folk. It *can* be that but really its a term to describe Black musicians doing music that can't quite be singularly defined in a genre: personal and experimental)

I just keep being SHOCKED by how much of what I (and many people) thought I knew about this sound, its limits and restraints, and keep having my mind blown with how much real work and boundary pushing was truly being down on the fringes of this sound!

They're not quite radio friendly, they're more brash, hornier, sillier, and particularly progressive (a lot of direct pro-woman lib songs, one is basically a pro-lesbian song without being able to just *say* it), and musically they're more complex, rich, and comfortable with outside influences.

WELL I just found this mix of Holland-Dozier-Holland (Motown pioneer producers) songs that are just AMAZING. Unique, bold, different - really showcasing a real diversity and power of what the soul sound could really do! I can't say for sure why it never caught on but I have my theories:

I like slow soul music, but its easy too for a lot of bands to get stuck in this specific template sound that's simple to replicate - a mechanism for vocals to stand out over basic use of instruments. At their most complex they approach an arena-rock swell of sound (which AOR sort of ripped off).

Not to get too deep on the subject but the whole "hang out in record stores and trade/talk music" thing is very white coded - in that it's always portrayed as done by white people, and they *never* engaged in funk/disco/soul when they do that (you know why). So this music is, essentially, gone.

I know I need to listen to more music, both current and outside my genres, but I keep discovering obscure 70s funk, disco, and soul bands that never quite went anywhere but still produced unique and phenomenal sounds, to the point that I'm actively angry at radio in my childhood for being so samey.
