you can make a TTRPG work without crunchy rules just like you can make a street fight into a wrestling match, but then you're relying almost entirely on the talent and experience of the players. so your mileage is going to vary a lot more.

i very much agree with this. i think about it a bit like professional wrestling - the rules can feel arbitrary because "it's all fake" but those same rules give you structure that makes a story easier to understand, lends legitimacy to your successes/failures, and provide a shared language.
