My ICQ UIN is 7231680. That number is burned into my consciousness. I inadvertently learned that you could see private conversations in public chat rooms when using Telnet instead of a browser on GeoCities. I can tell you the difference in audible dial-up handshakes between 1200, 2400, 14.4 kbps modems. I needed a edu email address to join Facebook after my university was admitted. We were here at the beginning. We made social media. You wouldn't be in my Top 8. I have usernames older than you.

Where things stand with the Department of War
A statement from Dario Amodei
I think one of the most staggering industry shifts in my 16 years as a tech reporter is that itβs not become a question of βshould our product help the government kill and/or surveil people?β but βto what extent?β

It was funny to see, I don't even remember which US newspaper it was anymore, but an obit of Ali Khamenei said something to the effect of "he lived a paranoid life in which he believed the US and Israel were out to kill him, which eventually happened"

Hey Media, while youβre asking Poilievre about stuff like this, please dont forget to ask him for a more credible reason why he STILL REFUSES to submit to the completely normal security check for an up-to-date security clearance during one of the most uncertain & dangerous times in Canadian history.

I can read a bunch of stuff on the computer and diagnose myself, but if a company does that and misdiagnoses me without a medical license they would be liable. This isnβt hard to understand, is there some kind of gas leak happening over there?

I know this is the Twitter sucks app- but the small amount of foreign press on here particularly now is stark comparatively and like things arenβt really moving over.

I'd like to ask Mr. Poilievre to sit down and think, and think hard, about what it means for Canada and for the world at large when a particular power, a great power on Canada's own borders, can decide to wage war on the whim of one man, without law and without constitutional constraint.

There's something really despicable about Trump calling for ordinary Iranians to take the risk of rising up against the regime. He's been so disdainful of the same sentiment in Ukraine. He's never taken a risk for anyone else's benefit. Man wouldn't stand up to serve himself at a buffet.

The part about this that kills me is that Iranians have been rising up against the regime in 2009, 2018, 2022, this year and more. They've been taking the risks and paying for it and for once I'd like to see a U.S. strategy that doesn't rely on other people's bravery to fix everything

A picture of PEW poll on global attitude survey, saying the % who rate the morality and ethics of people in their country as good vs bad, where the US has the worst rankings and Canada the best
Americans: we live in a fallen stateβembroiled by sin, cheating, lying, and evil. You cannot trust anyone, not even those who claim to know you best
Canadians: I love my neighbors and my friends!

Opinion | An Urgent Need to Contain Turkey
If the Iranian regime falls, beware Ankaraβs regional influence.
In which a Wall Street Journal op-ed explicitly compares Erdogan to the Ayatollah after the fall of Saddam Hussein and implicitly makes the case for an eventual war of aggression against Turkey by the US and Israel.

The IDF just ordered the forced evacuation of *all of Dahieh* a day after ordering the forced evacuation of all of South Lebanon.

Itβs Not Complicated
The mainstream media failed the public during the genocide in Gaza. The Key's editor-in-chief shares her vision for what comes next.
Former LA Times managing editor @sarayasin.bsky.social launches The Key, a new publication about Palestine that will be "a home for journalists who have had their stories spiked in mainstream outlets."

Peter Beinart: If the United States and Israel had not launched an attack on a country that poses no serious threat to them, those 180 school girls would be alive today.
Matt Schlapp (interjecting): "They'd be alive in a burka... This is a barbaric society."

well, today in floridly depressing news: the French helpline for female victims of male violence is facing "coordinated" attacks from men's rights activists, who keep calling up in the hope of making it harder for women to reach their services

It's so fucking insulting how these people don't bother to achieve the most basic understanding of the issue they've dedicated their careers to.
As an effeminate gay boy I never experienced gender dysphoria! These are easily distinguishable concepts for anyone who actually listens to the child.

The only gay people the Atlantic has ever thought might need protection are effeminate gay "boys" who they've decided need protection from the trans agenda, and historically, that's not what gay kids actually need protection from.
This fear lives only in the minds of straight cis journalists.
