11 A Lens of Unproductivity A Theological Hermeneutic for Disability Justice Kayko Driedger Hesslein Justice requires, among many things, identifying frames of bias that inhibit the questioning of systems that perpetrate and perpetuate injustice. Such identification is often the work of those alienated or rejected by the system, placing upon them a double burden. As the number of individuals suffering from long Covid (or PASC-post-acute sequalae Covid) approaches 100 million globally, wherein extreme fatigue, post-exertional malaise, and cognitive impairment are the most common symptoms, developing a theological hermeneutic that expands disability justice beyond those who are physically disabled becomes necessary yet also challenging. As someone who has had long Covid since the summer of 2022, the construction of such a hermeneutic is both life-giving and energy-draining, but the questions of and challenges to disability biases that rely on productivity or the ability to produce something can mark the way for a communal project of theological reconstruction over time. Even as these questions are raised, unproductivity guides us. In 1994, Nancy Eiesland proposed the idea of a disabled God. Challenging the normative discourse that both privileged physically perfect humans and discriminated against people with physical imperfections, Eiesland proposed both a new framework for differentiating between the individual and the system that limited them. She helpfully clarified the difference between impairments and disabilities, where impairment refers to "an abnormality or loss of physiological form or function," and disability is "the consequences of the impairment, that is an inability to perform some task or activity considered necessary" —a limitation that is determined by what "normal abled" people can do. Her clarification was important for arguing that many people have impairments but not disabilities if their environments are shaped to accommodate impairments.
