Today, after over 9 months of Achilles injury and rehab, I'm going to go running with my son. If I can get him out of bed on a Saturday morning...

I dunno about simple. It's not even been 6 years since we had to instruct ppl how to wash their hands properly. And I don't think reading is quite as hard as you make out either, but a target of reading 1 book a year would be a big target for at least 1 in 4 adults. We're not in a good place!

I dunno. It's like setting a target to brush your teeth twice a day. You're not doing it to clean them, per se, but it's a decent by-product. You'll likely not get dumber by reading 137 books in a year.

I very much enjoyed this Culture Study podcast from *April* with @joshgondelman.bsky.social. I visited Boston for the first time in May and I wish I was this enlightened before that!

How to run 4000km with a brain tumor A terminal cancer diagnosis made Jack Faint reassess his whole life. Now he’s running the length of India to show everyone what the human body can do.

Of course the day I post this story, 3 months after the interview (ask me why!), Liverpool bloody Football Club does a grid post πŸ˜‚

Answering our Why with geography Thinking about why we run is one thing, but deep academic research into why and where we run as a population can lead to a less anecdotal answer.

This week I found out about an interdisciplinary paradigm that didn't really exist when I was at university.

In an era where we can obsess over our why, it's a research topic that could help explain so much about running.

Read about it.

So it just occurred to me that the situation in LA right now is literally a "next civil war" scenario in "The Next Civil War" by Stephen Marche.

My god. I'm so hope it doesn't play out the same as the book.

It's because COVID demolished their communities > they took up running solo with the extra time they now had > they then joined a run club and then realized they could use running to build their own communities.

It doesn't happen overnight!

From TikTok to the track: Gen Z are driving running’s third great boom At the heart of running’s new explosion in popularity is the digitally native generation making the sport fashionable, communal and more diverse than ever

The Guardian says that the pandemic is not the cause of this running boom, which I think is absurd. Why did SO many people start run clubs in 2022, then?

Run clubs are a solution to both the American Loneliness Epidemic AND your local independent coffee shop's faltering revenue.

I'm fascinated by runners who get beyond the point of desiring personal achievement. Call it enlightenment, if you will, but marvelous things start to occur.
