Each of these games made me think the thought "holy shit, I didn't know games could *be*like that" and that's why they're my #9games

I loved this particular work. It's definitely going to be a primary source of inspiration for one of my games.
Counterpoint - show it to them now when the graphics are bad and they'll be all the more impressed once they become kinda sorta good
That or invest only in games with direct p2p connections that don't rely on company servers, if games like that even exist anymore.
It's wild to me that someone can pay money in a game like this, and then the company can effectively take it away not even 3 months later. Why invest your time or resources into anything online anymore?
Long horse is that you?
A long list of potion names and their associated icons, overflowing in a column
I think I added too many potions...
This is essentially the plot to "Eureka" lol. Wizards make everything better tho.
Making my first ever title screen has me feeling some big feels. Never been more amped to launch my first game! #indiedev #pico8 #gamedev
You'd probably enjoy this book, it has an entire magic system built on the premise of how translating words is hard: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babel,_...
I always recommend this fun tool to help people truly conceptualize how obscenely wealthy some people are: eattherichtextformat.github.io/1-pixel-weal...
"Critiquing its own work" says everything that needs to be said.
Creation is a process that has an outcome, but some would have you believe that creation is an outcome with a process that can be simplified and skipped over.
And what's worse, when the youth of the day lack that experience of identifying, and coming to terms with those feelings, the only choice left for them is to feel the way they are told to feel. It's not weakening just the mind for control, but a weakening of the heart.
Low key one of the worst implicationsof AI use in creative endeavors is the lack of introspection. If you don't go through the process of grappling with your choices, and you're outsourcing those decisions, I don't see how anyone could claim "they" made the "art."
A matryoshka of radial menus 👍👍👍
As an OG Mechwarrior fan, I have been raised on the belief that every key on the keyboard must do *something*. You're well on your way lol
I've been thinking about controls for my game in Pico8 and your list here helped me realize how much I'm really missing out on full keyboard controls. I've been dancing around just having X and O and I think it's been making me a worse game maker as a result. Might be time to move onto a new engine.
Nothing like confirmation bias to be sure you're making the right decision.
Thank you! I will!! 😤
A game menu with three options "Plants", "Potions", and "Goals". To the right, is a pixelated ink and quill, and to the right of that, a journal with some gold scribblings on the cover.
Adding some visual details to the menus 📙 #indiedev #pico8 #gamedev
After I learned to manage my ADHD, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Lowkey I think the hypo has been more difficult to deal with, I take the drugs but my energy still remains pretty low.
My guy - this 100% looks like a real game already.
A screen with several locked treasure boxes. At the bottom are some faded out contents with the label "Unlock at 50 effects discovered"
Added "locked boxes" that gate the progress of purchasing more plants behind progress milestones. This should hopefully give players something to look forward to as they continue to make progress in the game. #indiedev #pico8 #gamdev
Momma 😭
Whenever people say AI has sped up their workflows, I just assume they weren't doing anything very complex or interesting in the first place.
A screenshot of a game with several boxes of plants. It has a dialog overlapping the top that says "I can buy boxes of plants from the royal herbalist to aid in my research. The boxes take a full day to be delivered from the royal gardnes in the countryside."
Super simple, but I added some basic tutorial screens through dialogs that appear the first time a player enters a new part of the game. It helps give guidance on what the player should do, while also dropping some sweet sweet story flavor.

I think my favorite thing is when I see AI people being like, "oh this AI flow let me generate code from my notes, I'm 2x more productive." No. You've just made bad code faster and learned less to nothing from the process. Building junk code faster just results in more junk. Grow your skills.
I personally dislike this but it's the most creative thing I've seen all week so 🌟
A screenshot of a Disco Elysium video game text box that reads "Time to go to work in the shit factory!"
I can but dream to aspire to such poignant video game script writing
