The movie tied up most of the arcs and removed nearly a quarter of the ensemble. There’s nothing to build on without backpedalling.

But if someone new- ideally, let’s be honest, an asian woman- has a good idea for a new story, I’d be happy to see the surviving characters again.

People keep talking about new Firefly, as far as I can tell only because other people are talking about it. So here’s my contribution to that: I’m not fundamentally against the idea, but only if someone good has a good idea for it. If the idea is just β€œmore Firefly”, that’s not worth doing.

What’s that even meant to be a pun on?

Ah, that makes sense!

…wait. Are you much younger than I thought, or did you just come to the Punisher really late?

It wouldn’t have been completely outside the realm of possibility for him to have to done a Marvel Graphic Novel or similar with the character around that time, there were taking some chances with that kind of thing. TBH I get the feeling he just wasn’t that interested in Frank as a protagonist.

06.03.2026 10:45 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Obviously I don’t want him going anywhere near the character now.

The only person I can imagine possibly rivalling it at the time is Miller. Even now, the only Punisher comics to really match it are some of the Ennis Max volumes (there’s been a few great runs, but all in 616 stuff is dragged down by continuity and/or lineup changes). It would have been something.

The best Punisher story of the twentieth century is Return To Big Nothing, which is a kind of perfect thing, the gritty pulp novel story the character was made for, elevated by the absurdly high quality art and writing. It’s a Tarantino movie on paper, before Tarantino.

I can’t decide if it’s a shame or for the best that outside of the Daredevil guest appearances, Frank Miller never did a proper Punisher story in the 80s. It feels like the most natural pairing of character and creator there could have been, it’s genuinely odd that it didn’t happen.

Im increasingly of the opinion that the business model for conventions (especially in the UK but I’m sure this is true there too) is pretty much entirely based on what they can make off exhibitors rather than on the door. I don’t think I’ve EVER actually come out ahead financially from a con

We won the Second World War by carpet bombing German cities and incinerating thousands of Japanese civilians. The most morally defensible war in history, and that was only won through atrocity. The myth that there is an honourable, ethical way to make war is exactly that; a myth.

Here’s a thing about my position of being pretty much blanket anti-war- the only war I can think of this century that didn’t involve β€œour” side massacring innocent civilians, including children, is the Falklands, and that was an almost unique circumstance. It’s what happens in war. It just is.

Anecdotal, obv, but consistent enough I have to think it’s somewhat universal.

There’s a reason the dreaded Ronan Keating cover exists, you know?

The thing about it not being a hit here is I’d be interested in comparing, like, sales of the album over a period of a couple of years vs things that made a bigger short term splash. My experience of it was that every girl I knew owned at least one Goo Goo Dolls album, or the City of Angels OST

Hmmm. I don’t want to be mean about the person you’re quoting, but it feels very β€œI don’t pay attention to what women listen to at all” to suggest that Iris is in any way an obscure song. Maybe that’s unfair, I’m sleep deprived which makes my eyes unkind, but… that song was and is hugely pervasive

This feels very heavily influenced by things having been used in other media recently. Perhaps as reflective of record company music licensing deals as public consciousness

As a lover of schlocky crime, I love the ripped from the headlines stuff. The overheated, bug eyed tone of it just delights me. It’s probably not a healthy pleasure, but I am who I am I guess

(2 things I feel like I should maybe add:

Yes I know Bush Sr was president when this comic came out, but you know what I mean when I call it Reagan’s America.

While I find the politics of Baron’s Punisher a mixture of laughable and abhorrent, I still think they’re fucking fantastic comics)

This was written by famously right wing gun nut comics writer Mike Baron, who notoriously used Frank as a mouthpiece for his own opinions.

In the 80s, in Reagan’s America, this was a mainstream American conservative opinion.

If you needed proof that things really have got much, much worse.

One was a maths teacher, Methodist lay preacher and radical left wing political activist. The other was a technical draftsman, I think? It was never super clear and everyone I could ask is dead. Also he lied about everything that happened to him before WW2, so things are murky.
