Offering Received: a big pile of dragon-friendly textbooks for learning! (#753)
all the textbooks are interesting, but the history ones are the most fascinating... that's a whole different world of history to learn about!

jokes aside, one of these days i'm gonna have to actually read it, though. and three musketeers, at least. even if they'll probably take me a while
Cezary, of course Bane was inspired by the story The Count of Monte Cristo
it's a top tier revenge story, after all
everyone gets inspired by it

usually if you ask experts why an empire fell theyβll say itβs nuanced and multifaceted, so i think itβs kind of cool that with America future historians will get to just say like βoh they took the idiot train to moronsvilleβ
Honor is a pretty useful concept in many cases, and we can define the MAGA/Trump ethos in large part by their total lack of it, or interest in even pretending that they have any.
You want to convince me that AI has consciousness but I have spent my entire life failing to convince you that I have consciousness.
The other thing about the AI consciousness conversation is that the lion's share of the people arguing that it can be a thing either struggle to see, or are allied with people who struggle to see a large portion of living, breathing society as human.
So we dismiss it right there.
*young me, developing a strong sense of justice*
This is gonna be great, what an asset, this will never drive me insane
What a mistake we both made π

PANEL 1: Two cowboys are standing on a porch looking out. COWBOY 1: "Every day shit sucks harder'n ever, n' I jes get slower n' weaker." PANEL 2: The older cowboy speaks. COWBOY 2: "We ain't meant to triumph, son. We wrassle the angel, n' the point ain't to win, it's to wrassle. That's how the angel's gotta see it, anyhow."

The tragic Sir Balin! Painted for my personal project
What if there was a Knight and literally *everything went wrong for him.*
π©· Ιͺα΄'κ± κ±α΄α΄α΄Κ α΄κ°κ°α΄α΄α΄Ιͺα΄ α΄! π©·
Sir Balin again, after he commits the Dolorous Stroke and gets half his face blown off (but not his arms, that's just me leaving them off so I have less to paint)
THIS GUY! Sir Balin is a super cool guy!!! The Mallory chapters of "Le Morte D'Arthur" feel like a fucking Dark Souls game, they're *so* apocalyptic in tone. Definitely one of the characters I learned about while doing research for The Fair Unknown and thought "Oh man, there's something here."
ah, sir balin
the fuckup knight
i love him
one of the things about the ocean of blood
is that it must be paid for
what if there was a snabbit. just consider it
Clair: Leon S. Kennedy? Whatβs the S stand for? Leon: heh, something cool, no doubt (Leon looks at his license, sees it is Scott) βaw manβ
Leon: Hey Ada, did I ever tell you i was on the football team in high school? Ada: I donβt care (Flashback) Football coach: Kennedy! I need you out there! Leon, donning a Mr Raccoon mascot costume: βbe right there, coach!β
i canβt play re9 for a few more days, so hereβs a thread of some re2 and re4 Leon comics
What is the least health care a building could provide and still be called "a hospital"? What is the worst food people could produce and still count as a "meal"? What is the worst shelter that could still count as a "shelter"? That's the project. That and putting you in it.
If we somehow COULD crack how all human consciousness works in mechanistic ways, as a set of tickable boxes, they will set us to building machines that tick every one of those boxes and only those for the least cost and then set about Big Genocide. It's that easy. That's how it's all always worked.
One way to view all of capitalism is asking the question "what is the lowest bound of existence that can replace the mysterious?" again and again and replacing each piece. How little can we pay a worker that they will live long enough to work and sire replacements? How bad can we let the air get?
It even debases me to discuss either of our selves in terms of a monetary value, but here we are, these are the actual stakes of the argument. If you can set a formula for calculating your replacement value by a machine--even in the realm of cognition--that is what the bosses are going to seek.
I need not define human consciousness to exist as human consciousness. I need not define human consciousness to define what happens when a Markov chain strings together previous inputs as NOT consciousness but an elaborate RNG and set of conditionals. I do not need to do that because it cheapens me.
Every time you try to do this thing where you exactly quantify with a definition human consciousness, you take one of the great mysteries and bind it with mechanistic limits that are 1) inevitably incorrect and 2) cheapen the mystery.
You are setting a base price for your worth and driving it down.
