Nachts Blick auf einen Wald, vereinzelt Lichter.
Jetzt ist Stille
der Rest der Strecke,
ohne Erinnerung
kein Leben.
Ich hör meine Schritte
nicht länger,
was mich umringt,
ist verborgen.
Blind lauf ich weiter, ein fahler Hund
in der Kälte. Hier muss es sein,
hier nehme ich Abschied von mir selbst
und werde dann langsam
niemand.

Small Axe - Series 1: Alex Wheatle
The true story of award-winning writer Alex Wheatle, who spent his childhood in a mostly white institutional care home and was jailed after the Brixton uprising of 1981.
Just heard that Alex Wheatle has died. He was such a fantastic writer, who captured the intensity, the passion, the humour and the tragedy of life as an Black teen, in contemporary Britain and in times past. Steve McQueen's Small Axe episode four tells his story: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

A black-and-white photo of Baalu Girma, the famous Ethiopian writer. A formal portrait in suit and tie.
The original cover of the Ethiopian novel Oromay, published in 1983. The top line of Amharic text says Baalu Girma, the second line is Oromay. The cover was designed by Tibebe Terffa for Kuraz Publishing.
The cover of the English translation of Oromay, the UK edition from MacLehose.
The cover of the English translation of Oromay, the US edition from Soho Press.
On this day in 1984, the Ethiopian writer Baalu Girma vanished, almost certainly kidnapped & murdered by the Derg regime in retaliation for his novel Oromay. The brutal regime’s attempt to silence him failed, as Oromay is a beloved & popular classic. Thank you Ato Baalu. We remember.

Oromay — David DeGusta
Our English translation of the 1983 Ethiopian novel Oromay by Baalu Girma is out *today* in the UK (Feb 4 in US). Praised in The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement, and Kirkus (⭐️), among others, as a compelling spy/romance/political thriller/war novel. Really! www.davidwrites.net/oromay
