We ran themed workshops (e.g. Unity, Asperite, game design, audio) over a few months leading up to a game jam. Mentors made all the difference esp for ppl new to games.
Even just doing the organising of it all is a huge support.
Seeing/playing something like JS Joust or New Games at an event for first time is amazing! These aren't things you can just buy and play at home by yourself.

Hahahaha yes. Very handy! Also an airbrush holder.
And lots of cleaning tools. Prob airbrush thinner was other super useful thing I didn't know I needed.
I had to very quickly learn how to take it apart and put back together again haha. So much cleaning! But that will fix 90% of my issues.

Or they say one thing but really mean another. Context is key!
Also players don't speak 'game dev' language. So will describe problems in wildly different ways
