Currently writing the report for my @gerda-henkel-stiftung.de "Surviving the Crisis Years" grant, centred around our excavations of a LBA-EIA fortress in the Caucasus. It's amazing what we've accomplished in two years--so proud of my team! Photo: @shmills.bsky.social excavating the fortress gate.

Examples of cranial trauma from Bronze Age Charterhouse Warren, south-west England. At least 37 men, women and children were killed and butchered, their disarticulated remains thrown into a 15m-deep natural shaft. Were they also consumed? #TombTuesday

A close-up view of a necklace. The necklace is circular and composed of numerous small, beads strung on a thin, light-colored metal wire.
The beads exhibit a variety of shapes and colors, including orange-red amber beads. They are predominantly present at the top sections of the circle. There are also yellow, turquoise, blue, green, and multicoloured beads
The arrangement of beads appears uniform, strung in a continuous, circular pattern. The metal wire that holds the beads is visible. The background is a plain, dark gray/black color, drawing attention to the necklace's design and colors.

Colorful beads were very popular in the early #medieval period, particularly during the 6th and 7th century. This necklace was found in the grave of a woman in Donaueschingen-Neudingen. It consists of more than 50 beads made of amber and glass.
Dating ca 525-550 AD. 🧵1/2

The commodification of human remains perpetuates a dark legacy of colonialism, exploitation and dehumanisation.

We need to see decisive action to end such practices and respectfully repatriate stolen remains to their rightful resting places.

End the Depraved Sale of Human Remains (20th November 2024) YouTube video by Bell Ribeiro-Addy

Human remains looted during colonialism are being sold and auctioned online, sometimes disguised or incorporated into modified items.

During today's #PMQs I urged the government to take action to ban these depraved sales 👇🏾
