Happy New Year to all the #poets and #poetrylovers and #prospectivepoetrylovers (everybody else) out there! Let's make poetry in 2026!
As 2025 comes to a close, we're not coming to you with a request for a donation. But we love it when people subscribe.
Take your holiday discount with this link for Issue 17 while supplies last). Or send us your poems to read. poetrysouth.submittable.com/submit/d5d06...
Contributor copies and all but the international subscriptions went in the mail yesterday. Picked up our customs forms today and will mail the rest tomorrow.
Issue 17 is here! #poetry #litmag
So many wonderful poets brought together, we can't wait for you to see! Order yours at poetrysouth.submittable.com
Bluesky is finally back in Mississippi! No longer will we have to hitch up the mule and head over to Alabama to post. We did have to verify our age, though. Great for us, but not so great for the mule, who will probably get fat eating all those oats.
Issue 17 should be delivered today! Can't wait to see it in the flesh (not flesh, paper, actually) #litmag #poetry
We always love announcing our Pushcart Prize nominees, though it's always a challenge to make our final choices. Congratulations and best of luck to our six nominees! @pushcartprize.bsky.social #pushcartnominees
We're proud to preview the cover for Issue 17! Poets are reviewing their proofs and soon it will be off to the printer. Order your copy today or send us poems for Issue 18. We are all caught up on submissions and want to start reading again! #submissions #poetry #magazine

We've been hard at work (but not posting)! Issue 17 is nearly done β page proofs were sent to poets this week. We've also caught up on submissions to Nov. 1, so now might be a good time to send us some poems or order your copy of the new issue! poetrysouth.submittable.com
For a closer look, here is each panel of the 37th Annual Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium with 12 Southern writers and 5 Ephemera Prize Winners. Each session is free to attend and will be live-streamed on our WeltySymposium Youtube channel. #readings #writerscommunity #mississippi #southernwriters
Two weeks from today, we begin the 37th annual Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium at Mississippi University for Women. Here's our complete schedule! #writers #southernauthors #readings #bookfestival #TheW
North Mississippi friends! I'll be doing a reading and book signing at Bookends in Pontotoc this weekend. Come hear #poems from Tree Fall with Birdsong! Everyone is welcome!

We've finished responding to submissions for Issue 17. We read over 1000 submissions, so more than 4000 poems to select 100 pages. That means our acceptance rate for 2025 was about 2.5%. We mean what we said: there really wasn't room for all the good poems!
Just kidding, of course! The law is real and the fact that #Bluesky is blocking #Mississippi IP addresses is real, but we have heard of #VPN.
Too bad for the mule, though; she's feeling neglected.
Wondering why we're quiet? One reason is we've been busy! The other reason is we're based in Mississippi and Bluesky is blocking users in our state thanks to a restrictive new law. So we have to hitch up the mule and drive to Alabama to post. #mississippi #bluesky
Congratulations to L. Lamar Wilson who is featured at Poem-a-Day today for his poem "Lauren Oya Olamina Explains Earthseed to Ernest Hemingway."

"If 'Tree Fall' is loss β that things change, life ends, meaning is lost β what could represent the opposite qualities of birth, of creation, of fullness. An early poem gave me my answer with 'Birdsong.'"

We love that we can embed our @librarything.com books shelf on our website. It's a great way to promote poetry by our contributors, as well as other books we discover.
We've added Tree Fall with Birdsong to our @librarything.com bookshelf and therefore to our poetry page at www.muw.edu/poetrysouth/poetry/ where you can see more recent and notable #poetrybooks by Southern poets and Poetry South contributors.
Congratulations on a successful pub day!

ChillSubs' analysis of social media at Lit Mag News made us feel better: they call a 10:1 follower/following ratio healthy. Ours is about 2:1. We're still looking for cool people to follow, but glad to feel less pressure to follow back. @chillsubs.bsky.social litmagnews.substack.com/p/social-med...
Exiting the #awp25 Book Fair after another exhausting yet exhilarating three days! See you in Baltimore for #AWP26!
Poet Stasha Cole
Stasha Cole stopped by our booth. She has two poems forthcoming in Issue 17 (December 2022). So nice to meet a new contributor at #AWP25
Great to talk with contributor Carol Davis who stopped by the table at #AWP25 today. Sheβs in our forthcoming 2025 issue and 2022.
Looking forward to many more conversations! Stop by T1133!
Happy Friday #AWP25! Weβre already having a great day after our conversation with Mario, a poet from Iowa who stopped by the table in the first minutes of the Book Fair.
