omg ITS HAPPENING (i've been lusting after yudori's "Lovers of the Empire" for years now)

the trailer made me think it was more in the vein of Farewell My Concubine but i think it only manages to take from it aesthetically 🤔

im pretty used to watching japanese media about men abd suffering, while the women suffer as props. even then i got really quite upset at some parts of this. but the kabuki is SO riveting, tho i wish there were less close ups and more wide shots to show off the actual experience of it!

was very very excited to watch this as a huge fan of this type of drama. i think maybe it could have benefited from restraint and thinking abt characters/story more, instead of reveling in its visuals. also not for ppl who want to see queer or patriarchal/feminist commentary. super pretty tho!
