No surprise here.
At GSFC, I was told (HQ managers and CSs) that we are still reorganizing following the budget numbers set by the PBR 2026 rejected by Congress.
As noted by @nasawatch.bsky.social OMB is still in full impounded mode .
I can attest it: I am at 50% FTE since Jan/1

Despite the talk, "Reductions in Force" (RIFs) haven't officially hit #NASA.
Instead, the agency relied on voluntary retirements with severance for civil servants. Official RIFs have strict rules and bring the kind of bad publicity leadership wants to avoid.

An appeal to the new administrator to save #NASA Earth Sciences.
I think it is well said.
But at the same time late in the sense that the damage is already structural and irreparable.
Now it is a matter of starting over (if it ever happens)

I guess is being practical and being obvious.
This is where we are now.

Plz, keep an eye on the fate of this workforce likely to be reduced next.

If the experts who process climate data, innovate in satellite technology and monitor our Earth are treated as disposable, is "Saving NASA" just a political talking point?
How can we claim to value the science while abandoning the very people who make it possible?

The silence and actions from new NASA Administrator regarding the Earth Science workforce is deafening.
While leadership vows a "mission-first" culture, that mission seems focused on the Moon and Mars at the expense of our own planet.

Project funding (and associated contractors) can be terminated far more easily than a federal position.
While politicians champion the safety of "federal jobs," they ignore the thousands of contractors who form the agency's invisible backbone.

But what about the contractors?
In many centers, they make up 2/3 of the total workforceβespecially in the Earth Science Division.
These workers have zero protections: no severance and none of the RIF rules that federal employees enjoy.
Contractors are lucky if they get 3 months' notice.

I cannot avoid noticing that space science organizations are more vocal and active in providing #NASA science related policy information.
NASA is a big founder of Earth Sciences, yet major ES societies like AGU, AMS or GSA seem like they are MIA on this matter.

The NY Times and other news outlets reported that GSFC decreased its workforce by 11%.
This figure is misleading; the actual reduction was significantly higher. Here are at least two reasons why:

NASA will finally have a 2026 budget and an administrator
but still not good news for Earth Sciences.
Despite the title of this article, I take issue with this "better" scenario. It may reflect the authorβs bias.

Clearly a challenge for the new administrator who yet has to say anything about Earth sciences beyond its commercial applications.
