Been around since the beginning of time but yes that term “atmospheric river” is relatively new. First used in mid 90s in a research paper. You may have heard the term “pineapple express”? Same thing but that is now folded under the umbrella of an atmospheric river that originates near Hawaii.

The people of #Jamaica need our collective prayers right now! Hurricane #Melissa is gaining strength as it approaches the island! Now, the 6th lowest pressure for an Atlantic Hurricane (896mb) with 180mph winds! They will need the world’s aid after this! 🙏🏾

The sun rising on the visible satellite to reveal our two Tropical Cyclones #Imelda & #Humberto! Both moving away from the US but coastal water dangers remain. Bermuda watching closely for direct impacts!
The Tropic are alive! TS Humberto is expected to strengthen into a Hurricane but right now is forecast to stay away from US. Invest 94L has the best chance to make it to the US. Everyone from FL to the Carolinas should keep an eye on it. Stick with @weather.bsky.social for updates!
