I was in a working men’s club in County Durham where the trade unionists were racing their whippets, and the only thing anyone could talk about was whether it should be the Pahlavis or the Qajars who get restored to the Peacock Throne

Can you job share with Roberto De Zerbi?

I’ve also accepted as Iran’s leader, although I plan to hold onto the role permanently

I’m getting dangerously close to being the same age as the parents of celebrities

(Also get better soon πŸ€—)

More of these people need to watch I’m Alan Partridge and realise they acting like him

They talk about bartending as if it’s coal mining or bricklaying. There’s no one who looks and sounds more middle class than me, and I’ve worked behind bars and waited tables. It’s hardly a sign of a gritty life

By all logic it should be that you were wrong about Kemi, because on paper she just looks like a generic Tory partisan. And yet that is totally inadequate as an explanation for her in ways that I can’t quite articulate

06.03.2026 17:47 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The kind of people she reminds me most of are Reddit atheists circa 2012

(I think it was university because I’m pretty certain whatever made Kemi the way she is happened to her as an adult. When you tell a child of mediocre intelligence they’re very smart and they internalise it, you get Liz Truss, not Kemi)

My pet theory is that someone at university called her a brave and/or original thinker simply for being openly conservative when all her peers were generic student leftists, and she has made that her entire personality

Even if that’s true, what’s the point? There’s 0 chance of a general election before January 2029, so even if a party of the right enters No.10 at the fist opportunity it’s guaranteed the POTUS will be someone who hates Trump’s guts (and that includes if one of Trump’s kids becomes POTUS)

The issue with Kulusevski is that he's a type of player who are ten a penny at the moment. In isolation he is good enough to play for a champions league side, just don't think he's better than what most already have.

I actually rate Kudus but he is a system player imho, so limited appeal

No one event will ever split MAGA, certainly not in the short term. Best you can do is death by a thousand cuts/guerrilla warfare

I could imagine some clubs in need of a midfielder taking a punt on Maddison, as his passing range means he should recover from his injury ok. Vicario is a perfectly serviceable backup goalie for a big team I guess. Porro and Kulusevski maybe?

She’s such an embarrassment

Romero is clearly a talented defender who, if he could work on his lack of discipline, could be playing for Real Madrid. But not only has he not, he’s shown very little interest in even trying

06.03.2026 14:42 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Surprisingly few, because Tottenham’s MO for a long time has been to buy players who are undervalued because, while clearly very talented, have a flaw or two that makes other big teams avoid them, and then try to fix the flaw.

For most of their current team, those flaws persist

β€œThey are terrified of this situation”

And that’s a bad thing?? You should always be worried about the consequences of armed conflicts, even ones you fully support.

Unserious is too kind a word for her, she is just frivolous

One of my favourite little factoids is that every GOP president since Teddy Roosevelt has presided over at least one recession (Roosevelt, Taft, Nixon and Dubya had two and Eisenhower had three)

I’d absolutely love to see her twitter feed, because tbh I think you’re overestimating how respectable it is. IMC is almost certainly there but it’ll also be full of people with usernames like @BasedElonStan1488

Or indeed her cast-iron belief that supporting this war will be popular

06.03.2026 12:32 πŸ‘ 5 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And this isn't even a "well this is a good headline for the general election in a few months, we can deal with the consequences after we've been re-elected". This is just a "good" headline that serves no purpose, with consequences they will have to deal with themselves

At this point being pro-grammar schools is just snobbery and/or retvrn slop

06.03.2026 12:08 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I could understand the pro-grammar school position more (although would still disagree with it for broadly the same reasons as you) if British schools were generally regarded as subpar. But it's not true! State comprehensives are generally pretty good!

Goodwin has repurposed Stalin’s β€œhow many divisions does the pope have?” quote into β€œhow many substack subscribers does Hannah Spencer have?”

You can imagine that he regards himself as a celebrity and respected public intellectual, so could coast to victory on sheer name recognition. And now he’s lashing out because his bubble of narcissism has been pierced

06.03.2026 09:50 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Another factor I suspect is that he thought it would be easier than it was. I can imagine him thinking β€œI’m a big deal on twitter, the BBC loves having me on and thousands pay me for my opinions, getting a mere 15k people to vote for me will be easy!”
