For the majority of last year, I was busy running @thelostdex.bsky.social! This project took a lot out of me, but I'm super proud of what the team was able to accomplish. This was my page in the zine, a little beta ghost we dubbed Spookie~

I really wanted to capture that expedition journal vibe and I hope I did alright on that front. I like it well enough, and either way it’s immortalized in a book now so there’s no changing it, but I hope I can do this style of entry better in the future. I leaned into the initial idea of the LostDex zine where it was going to take place on a recently rediscovered archipelago, but that concept loosened up for more writer and artist freedom.
The final entry for @thelostdex.bsky.social was Chimeran (Beta Giratina) and easily the one I struggled with the most - I kept tweaking and rewriting nearly all the way to the deadline! Huge thanks to @cerisecrescent.bsky.social for doing such a fantastic job making this beast look majestic!

This was another chance to connect an entry to things that affect species in our own world, like over-hunting and poaching, but also to add in an invasive species aspect. Where I live, invasive wild boars have been a growing problem for decades and they continue to spread despite efforts to contain or exterminate them before they destroy ecosystems they don’t belong in. This is, as is the case with most invasive species, a human made problem. While Boarish is another design that I adore, ultimately I can see why it didn’t make it all the way.
Boarish was the next Pokémon entry I wrote for @thelostdex.bsky.social as well as another one I had the opportunity to name which I was absolutely thrilled to do. This is probably my favourite entry alongside Grenmar, and Waggisbag [on Tumblr] made such adorable artwork to accompany it!

Although I didn’t name a region of origin, I treated these two as regional forms. It was interesting that Tyrogue initially had more animal inspiration, with the ears on it’s helmet-like head, and Hitmontop just looked alien, which I think is awesome. Ultimately, I can see why these designs ended up being scrapped in favour of what we got officially, but it’s still fun to imagine how they would exist in the world.
The next entries for the @thelostdex.bsky.social zine were beta Tyrogue and Hitmontop, and their bizarre designs were wonderfully brought to life by lilla_chan [on twitter/X]. It was really interesting seeing the early iterations of a Pokémon that ended up making it into the games!

I loved being able to not only read Wayfarer's amazing writing on this beta Pokémon but to be able to draw the piece that went with it for the zine itself.
Despite being a relatively simple “animal +” design, I love that they were trying to make fun type combinations that early in the franchise. I wanted to lean into the fantastical aspects of Pokémon where some can swim or live in lava without worrying too much about how absurd that would seem in reality. As with some of the other entries I wrote, I touched on reasons for population decline and why they would be considered a “lost” species in most parts of the Pokémon world. I feel like it’s important to talk about things like this, especially since a lot of us are passionate about the natural world and, and even official entries mention it from time to time.
Continuing on with my entries for @thelostdex.bsky.social, I was really excited to write the entry for Grenmar since it’s one of my favourite beta Pokémon. I had a lot of fun envisioning their behaviours and habitats, and @seraphicarts.bsky.social brought it to life so wonderfully with their art.

These two Pokémon (like a handful of others in LostDex) aren’t related but were paired up for space/layout reasons, so I didn’t see a need to link the two when I wrote their entries, despite them both being present on the same page in the artwork.
The first Pokémon I was responsible for as a writer in the @thelostdex.bsky.social zine project. I was given the opportunity to name them both, and I’m happy with how their entries turned out and how fitting the names feel for their designs. @diantimony.bsky.social provided the wonderful art!
With the advent of new information regarding lost Pokemon coming to light, we are now setting up shop over here to cover our bases if we decide to move forward with a Volume 2!
