"Which of us is the fisherman, and which one the trout?" No one wanted to take another crack at that Bad Guy dialogue and come up with *anything* better?

I think I even shrugged it off at the time as, "Well, I'm sure she's busy so it's nice of her to pop in for even a couple days." But apparently she really wanted to come back! Instead Joel Silver insisted they had to do a Bond/Jones thing with a new female lead each time. The hell, man.
Rapace isn't bad in the movie, but man she is given nothing to do. She's not really a foil to either Holmes or Watson, she doesn't bring a new energy or skillset to the proceedings, she's just The Girl Involved With The Plot.
helps quite a bit if I'm being honest
Harris makes the choice to underplay Moriarty, with a relaxed, shabby exterior barely masking raw nerve psychosis. It's not a bad choice, and has certainly aged better than Andrew Scott screeching his way through the BBC series, but you kinda want him to sink his teeth into the ham a bit more.
You know, the original film's plot may have been a glorified SCOOBY-DOO episode, but it at least bothered to go through the motions of a mystery. This one though Holmes knows from minute 1 who/what he's up against. It's closer to a Victorian Bond movie than a Sherlock Holmes story.
#70: ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL (2025)
Director: Rungano Nyoni
#69: ONE PIECE Season 1 (2023)
Fridging the previous film's female lead immediately would be aggravating no matter what, let alone that it's Rachel Goddamn McAdams getting ignobly shuffled off.
I have seen the Guy Ritchie SHERLOCK something like 500 times (thanks TNT!) but only watched GAME OF SHADOWS once, finding it to be a REVENGE OF THE FALLEN case of "Well...you liked the last one so...more and more and more of it?" to borderline unwatchable results. But let's run it back.
I will put up with any number of nonsense sequels to Pixar classics so long as they pay for big swings like this.
it's not right that Wampler is gone

Ben Stiller is calling out the White House after it used a clip from Tropic Thunder in a video promoting the Iran war.
βWe never gave you permission and have no interest in being part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie,β Stiller wrote.
And then, as now, you can just say, βRacism.β and thatβs kind of that.
Almost every essay we publish is at least that long, often longer. People still enjoy deep reading & are looking for a good excuse to immerse themselves in something worthwhileβespecially in a clickbait economy/world. Clickbait articles are cheetos & some of us still prefer a well-prepared meal π€·ββοΈ

Iβve got some more writing up at @bloody-disgusting.com. This time I had the chance to talk about a classic Shaw Brothers horror flick and sing the praises of one of the studioβs greatest directors.
"Not everything she tries works, but every choice is made with the kind of full-throated commitment to her vision that too many filmmakers lack." yes @lacymb.bsky.social on Emerald Fennell
It is 2026 and we are not fucking doing this anymore. EIGHT WOMEN came forward and told stories of Franken GROPING AND FORCIBLY KISSING THEM. The man was a sexual abuser. He did not and does not belong in congress. Fucking period. End of conversation.
We made it to Friday, other buckets! For your easy listening this weekend, #MakeMeWatchIt welcomed @devindra.bsky.social to chat SCARLET & THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME, @thetruebrendanf.bsky.social reports on #WutheringHeights, and I extol John Carpenter's ELVIS.

When I was a kid, one of my first internet friends sent me a VHS that contained a bunch of cool pirated shit and this was on it. It was years before I learned what it actually was, but it blew my fucking mind.
tweet from @wtflanksteak: "There's a reason people went nuts for Ryan Coogler's video explaining different film formats. Interviews and videos about the craft and the work are blowing up."
thinking about this constantly
Important Games to Me:
Bob Hoskins on Super Mario Brothers:
βI didnβt even know it was a game, my kids told me. βWhat are you doing next, dad?β
βSuper Mario Brothers.β
βOh, thatβs a game.β
βWhat?β
And they showed me this thing jumping up & down.
βThis is you.β
And I thought: βI used to play King Lear.β
Goebbels had imposed a "racial questionnaire" in which everyone employed in the German film industry had to declare their "race" to continue to work. When Veidt was filling in the questionnaire, he answered the question about his Rasse (race) by writing Jude (Jew). 123] Veidt was not Jewish, but his wife was, and Veidt would neither renounce the woman he loved nor collaborate with the regime as many others did. [23]
Truly the greatest movie of all time. My favorite fun fact was that the actor who played major Strasser fled Germany with his Jewish wife rather than denounce her. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrad_Veidt?wprov=sfti1#Emigration
Jesus Christ, man, you need to apologize for your craven cowardice on the nonexistent βDEIβ panic, hire more people to fix the disgusting unattended shelves due to chronic understaffing, and stop making people need security to unlock a cabinet to buy underwear. This isnβt complicated.
...study on the ways in which men hurt women, women hurt women, and communities close ranks rather than address horrors happening in plain sight. The *shaking on my couch* fury I felt throughout the last stretch just tells you how successfully the film gets under your skin.
GUINEA FOWL initially wrings dark laughs from situational comedy of being stuck with your overbearing family at the funeral of a relative you're not 'that' sorry to see go. But not very deep into the film, it plays the card you've been expecting/dreading and becomes an increasingly maddening...
Been a while since a movie made me so angry that I wanted to put a brick through my TV (this is a compliment).
Inside Kristi Noem are two wolves, and she managed to shoot both of them.
