Never forget that this what The Washington Post said when Noem was nominated.

"U.S. military investigators believe it is likely that U.S. forces were responsible for an apparent strike on an Iranian girls' school."
"The strike would rank among the worst cases of civilian casualties in decades of U.S. conflicts in the βMiddle East."
Youβd never know that half of these teams (those of Drs. Tai and Ogilvie) are actually being funded by the Terry Fox Research Institute, not CIHR. π€
As someone who averages maybe 1 submission per year, if I thought I would be limited in R&Rs, I would definitely apply more.
But eliminating 3xND grants (how many could that be) isn't going to change app pressure, especially when "is this a resubmission" is either a checkbox on ResearchNet and/or a subjective judgement that would require enormous extra work to assess.
But single digit success rates vs double digit success rates with artificially constrained application numbers is a distinction without a difference in terms of impact on the research environment.
Is this something that's being considered because they think it will make success rates look higher (it won't), reduce application pressure (it will increase it), or part of general "austerity" in the bureaucracy (false economy)?
Lawless authoritarianism:
-"How Trump Keeps Withholding Money After Being Sued 198 Times"
-"Officials Violated More Than 50 Court Orders in NJ"
-"ICE violated at least 96 court orders in January"
-"The judge then provided an additional count of 113 more court orders violated in 77 more cases"
I try to remember this when I'm impatient w/ someone. And I think everyone w/ any kind of personal assistant, from secretary to housecleaner, should periodically do some of that work themselves.
I also think about it when people want to replace skilled labor with a planet-destroying slop machine.
makes us pretty fucking annoying TBQH ππ€£
Many of the scientists Jeffrey Epstein courted were already well-established and well-funded. So why didnβt they all just say no? Science talked with three who did just that.
Hereβs how Epstein approached them, and why they refused to have anything to do with him. β¬οΈ https://scim.ag/40qbXnv
Second at my neighbourhood park, which floods and freezes one of the foot paths each year for skating.... fun and free activity, especially for kids, and makes the most of Montreal's long winters βοΈ

One disgusting aspect of all this is Trump fundamentally doesnβt care about it at all. He barely knows where any of these places are. He likes cash in brown envelopes and being on TV as Mr Big Important Guy. Heβs just willing to pull any lever he thinks might keep that stuff flowing indefinitely.
We finally know what the explosive growth in university middle management is up to: precision recruiting.
You just won a legal victory against the lamest-duck politicians in Canada, who dream of burning down your campus and salting the earth it stood on. You should:
- flush your efforts down the drain and undo the win
- literally anything else?
Very curious what the play is here, particularly whether the province has indicated it will offer McGill a bigger cut of the increased fees.
Because otherwise it seems like folding like a noodle against a staggeringly unpopular provincial government that's going to be voted out in a few months.
Well, well, well. Look who came back from their floating anarchocapitalist utopias in international waters to advocate for strong institutions.
Please guys can we stop calling complex systems "more than the sum of their parts?"
I'm guilty of this word crime myself, but I did my time by writing this post. π§ͺ
I won't believe it until it is done. You guys only paying attention after it's too fucking late is why you all need to go.
This reminds me of the idiots who were saying asteroid mining is an awesome idea because there was one with $700 quintillion worth of nickel in it.
does he know what will happen if everyone buys the cheap cuts of meat
Yes the notorious "group selection" piece with E.O. Wilson (!).
for the last time, when the government becomes the customer, the vendor, and the regulator, and pumps the product into public space, it's not a regular super monopoly and i am not being a dick about communism. that is literally where i think this is going.
in a free market, X would be dead and Elon Musk would not be able to open a credit card. This is not a free market, and the people who tried to organize a boycott against a bad website got sued out of existence.
i think left-liberals sometimes have a hard time seeing what's going on here because "capitalism" has come be a substitute word for all social ills. but american media consolidation is a nascent planned economy.
