I would recommend reading “The Next Big Thing in School Improvement”. Which examines how waves of educational fads rise and inevitably fall as they try to solve the fundamental problems of a lock-step mass education system and the fact that learning is all but invisible.

Try asking it to solve a cryptic crossword clue and watch it get more and confused

I do not, I repeat, I do NOT want to go back on Twitter (until it’s called Twitter again as a start) but it’s quite sad on here, the lack of engagement. There’s been some massive AQA MFL news this week and there’s *no one* to discuss it.
Feel like I’m just chatting to myself…..!

Had an excellent student lead STEM convention at school today highlighting student research with a poster competition. This one won a special prize. Lego electrolysis anyone? @bobthechemist.bsky.social @cerg.bsky.social @sfed-rsc.bsky.social #chatchem

However, when writing formulae/equations we are condensing knowledge (causal, temporal, macro and sub-micro) and mathematic operations into the symbols. As a result, the symbols have the potential for multiple meaning making. Which good news for expert chemists but problematic for the learners.

Symbolic language is vital to meaning making in chemistry as it is very difficult to express the quantitative composition of a substances or molar ratios in chemical reactions in words alone.

Thanks to @mkseery.bsky.social for organising this Symposium for @cerg.bsky.social on language and the teaching and learning of Chemistry.
Interesting talks and side-discussions that are helping me organise thoughts on "Disciplinary Literacy".
(for webinar with @greenshawrs.bsky.social next year!)
