truly the biggest circles in my interest venn diagram are "that sure was a string of words that has never been said before, let's see where this goes" and "romanticization of the mundane"
In 1983, Ruth Schwartz Cowan published a book called More Work for Mother where she argued that modern household tech (washing machines/vacuums) didn't reduce women's housework time, it just raised standards of domesticity. Household work is never shortened by tech & you can extrapolate that out.
It's bizarre to me how many people in the comments here seem to think that automation is going to translate into more freedom for the working class.
When has that ever panned out? How much leisure time do you have, after years of these "innovations"? We are Charlie Brown trying to kick the football
A board game board designed to look like a mall directory
my next silly little game has reached a point of needing playtesters!
If you have a group of 1-6ish players who would be interested in a board game where they are trying to become the coolest mallgoth at the local mall, please give me a wave!
(Can be printed or played in an image editor.)
btw about that pixar thing, the reason why these people think having a conversation about gay people with kids is difficult is because they don't know a way to say to their kid "gay people are normal but you are not allowed to be one" without sounding like a bigot (there is a reason for that)
the thing about code is that it does stuff.
you want your code as clean as possible so it does a minimal number of things you aren't intending for it to do.
if you're not even writing your code, who knows how many extra things it's doing? what extra loops or steps or data leaks waiting to happen?
Used flower pot at Goodwill for $13
Stop donating to Goodwill!!! Their CEO makes millions because they're taking all the stuff they get and marking it up 2000% so people you think ur helping can't even afford it. Seriously, stop donating to Goodwill. Give things to ur neighbors or domestic violence shelters. Stop donating to Goodwill.
it can't tell if the output is true because *it has no concept of truth*. The only thing it "knows" is "this output is correlated"
It is structurally indifferent to truth
diagram of a fictional mall as a board game. the edges of the board have part of the game's rules
wanted to have the food court big enough to fit the rolls in it but that didn't feel right aesthetically
the rules seem to be about right pacing wise so it's just a matter of testing and tweaking boards till I'm happy
screenshot where a user has requested "draw a gnome surfing" and someone else has replied with a hastily doodled little stick guy wearing a red pointy hat catching some waves on a surf board
youraislopbores.me is a fun little idea where you put in a "prompt" and another user "steals ai's job" and draws or writes an answer. but i want to draw some stuff and there aren't enough requests rn so check it out and i might be your pretend AI
this is like
the thesis statement of our times
"It is not a mild infection, it is not a mild virus; it is a severe illness. And they kept on telling me they wish they'd known beforehand how bad measles was, so that they could have protected their family."
There is a legal provision in immigration law that someone married to a US citizen can stay in the US while there visa is pending. Immigration officials have long recognized it to allow residency during the wait time. The DHS has just stopped following this part of the law.
New report βsuggests that leading AI companies are doing little to police how developers who pay for access to their AI models are using them. One consequence, the group warns, is that AI toymakers can ship products to children that are powered by AI models that are only intended for adults.β
Periodic reminder that ICE does not just track and watch immigrants. They are collecting and storing information on us all.
Yep. βKnowing who to be mad at is praxisβ is Mariame Kabaβs quote and it is wisdom for these times. (1/2)
Sam Denby, Amy Muller, Ben Doyle, and Adam Chase pose in a misty park.
the one and only Amy Muller returns
Reminder that Bluesky doesnβt have an algorithm like every other social media.
That means that if you see artists, writers, or creators of any kind resharing their existing posts regularly, itβs because they want YOU (the people following them for such stuff) to also hit that repost button as well.
Tried to buy a new webcam but the one I got had like... the picture shifted to the left and right slightly? not sure how else to explain it.
looking for suggestions for a 1080 webcam under like $50, more than that and I'll just buy a used phone to use instead cuz my phone has been working great.
Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.
I'm sorry but even if you're not who made it, if you've bothered to treat some genAI images as something that deserves to be seen, you aren't on my feed anymore.
oh good, the adorable cat accounts are now sharing AI generated fanart of their cats, why is nowhere safe?
Unpopular opinion, but a lot of this "doing it right" mentality is how we wind up with games all feeling the exact same.
Difficulty spikes, weird controls, ropey onboarding all of it critical to prevent games feeling like they're ground down and pumped out safe mush.

We have the data. My longest columns have more readers, who read longer, and who share them the most.
It is true that if your goal is to maximize the number of clicks on a given piece of content, you don't want to produce a 3,000-word piece. But maybe not everyone should be trying to maximize clicks! Maybe it's okay to target a smaller, more devoted audience. Indeed I've bet my entire career on it.
The thing about talking about anything politically-related is that even the people that agree with you will end up being frustrated with you.
It's been true for as long as I've been alive, and I do it anyway because I'd rather not attract chuds whatsoever lol.
It is what it is.
oh but if they used those billions of dollars to start paying cashiers $30/hr starting pay i would consider it. Just in case they want some actual market research.
