I interviewed Docter in person when he was making the rounds with the original Inside Out. He seemed like a good egg and was one of Pixar’s best directors. So this tone deaf rationale is extremely disappointing.

He worked slow and steady, which meant he had a remarkably consistent output. Many people say Green Card is his one stumble, but even that is solidly entertaining if not remarkable. Retirement is well earned, but man I miss his singular voice.

Saw The Truman Show at a theater last night. Man, that holds up. Arguably the Network of its day.

Len Garry of the Quarrymen, the team chest basis for the band that became the Beatles, has passed away. I was very lucky to meet him when I went to the UK. I’ll always remember him singing along with Beatles songs in Liverpool, enjoying his place in history. Farewell, Len. Nothing to get hung about.

But folks, you simply cannot make that much timeless work without being the primary reason all that work is timeless. You cannot make six all-time classics in eight years without being truly great, regardless of whether you mark your trail with an inimitable style.

Directors that don’t have an obvious style tend to get the short straw in historical appreciations of the great filmmakers. If we don’t clearly see *them* in the finished film, we think they must not be the primary driver of the film’s quality.

This hurt Sidney Lumet, and it hurt Rob Reiner.
