The (Doubt) Monster at the End of This Book What I discovered lurking in my copy edits

Author friends are invaluable. I was reminded of this fact this week as I finished copy edits on The Mad Wife & had self doubt about nearly everything. An author friend's email landed in my inbox & helped scare off the monster I found lurking at the end of the book. open.substack.com/pub/meaganch...

Authors, search for your books. Meta pirated both of my books to train its AI.

These women often had no choice in their pregnancies, births, or whether they could keep their babies. Their stories inspired The Girls We Sent Away. #InternationalWomensDay

On International Women's Day, I'm reflecting on how history remembers the achievements, but often forgets those who suffered in silence. Like the estimated 4 million unwed pregnant women who were sent to maternity homes between 1945-1973 during the Baby Scoop Era.

What my soul needs right now: a collab of Billie Eilish and Joni Mitchell. I'd settle for a Billie cover of Circle Game. How can we make this happen?

I listened to the first episode after my agent recommended it. It's wild! And fascinating! I need to binge the rest.

Thank you! It was an interesting era to write about. I did lots of gelatin salad and TV dinner research. 😂

I'm thrilled to reveal the cover of my novel THE MAD WIFE. Set in 1950s suburbia when hysteria was a diagnosis, it's a haunting exploration of identity, motherhood, and the suffocating grip of societal expectations that will leave you questioning the lives we build—and the lies we live. #booksky

Yes! Love this…says an author who will soon be soliciting blurbs. 😩

I've been re-reading that as it's inspiration text for my next novel that comes out later this year. My 16yo daughter just read it for the first time and it was fascinating to get her insights.

Thanks for sharing! Connection "without any kind of algorithmic interference" instead of a platform that changes with whims seems more sustainable...if we can achieve it to begin with.

Yesterday was productive:
✔️Worked on my new book.
✔️Caught up on emails I ignored while editing my 3rd book.
✔️Stood in the cold and chatted with a kindred-spirit neighbor.
✔️Started re-reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin for inspiration (see #1 above).
✔️Deleted Twitter/X account.

Your brain is lying to you about the “good old days” The science behind why we think the past was better than the present.

This is why I started writing historical fiction: “Humans have memories that are both short and bad, which leads us to forget just how bad many things used to be in even the recent past, and take for granted the improvements that have been made.” www.vox.com/future-perfe... #booksky

Great idea. I submitted final dev edits on book 3 last week, so today, I open a clean document and begin work on book 4. This next one might be a bit rage-ier than I thought it would be a few months ago...

Yes! I got a 2-book deal because I started writing the next one while querying. By the time I got an agent, I had the first draft done. When I had the first call with my editor, she asked if I had anything else, I pitched her that second book and she bought both.
