Thanks, that's very useful. From what I can tell, most models skip over images/charts in the PDFs. Looking for an AI option for making PDFs accessible. OlmOCR folks said they are working on it
Title, author list, and two figures from the paper. Title: The Aftermath of DrawEduMath: Vision Language Models Underperform with Struggling Students and Misdiagnose Errors Authors: Li Lucy, Albert Zhang, Nathan Anderson, Ryan Knight, Kyle Lo Figure 1: On the left is a math problem, where students are asked to draw x < 5/2 on a number line. The right side shows two example student responses that differ in correctness. DrawEduMath pairs each math problem with one student response, and prompts VLMs to answer questions about the student response. Figure 2: VLMs consistently perform worse on answering DrawEduMath benchmark questions pertaining to erroneous student responses. Performance on non-erroneous student responses is labeled with specific VLMsโ names; that same modelโs performance on erroneous student responses is directly below.
Models are now expert math solvers, and so AI for math education is receiving increasing attention.
Our new preprint evaluates 11 VLMs on our QA benchmark, DrawEduMath. We highlight a startling gap: models perform less well on inputs from K-12 students who need more help. ๐งต

Multiple articles have reported allegedly alarmingly low levels of #math prep of students at @ucsandiego.bsky.social (buff.ly/L5TlNL3 ). We need to know how this is being measured because research has shown that traditional techniques have made many errors (buff.ly/9YyhCvW). #AcademicSky #highered

Text Shot: Fear-based framing dulls the pedagogical opportunities AI tools can provide. Emerging research illustrates how generative AI can support personalized and scaffolded learning that aligns with constructivist theories and Vygotsgyโs Zone of Proximal Development. Studies by Kanont et al. (2024) and Zheldibayeva (2025) describe the possibilities for AI to act as a learning buddy that enhances listening, writing, and other literacy skills. But when institutional framing casts AI as illicit, these learning supports become off-limits. This has troubling consequences for accessibility. Students with disabilities depend on AI-enhanced assistive technologies. Kuerban et al. (2025) demonstrate how specialized AI tools can provide essential support for learners with dyslexia by blending generative AI and augmented reality. For these students, AI is not an advantage but a bridge to equitable learning. Similarly, Zhaoโs (2025) work shows how L2 learners use AI to strengthen reading,โฆ
