This feels relevant right now. Literally the whole point in taking Bryson back in the trade was so they could keep Ville out of the lineup I guess?? I don’t think I’ve ever seen an organization actively go out of their way to make sure a player can’t get in the lineup like the Jets have here lmao.
A lot of improvement throughout those NHL games. I was curious because Micah McCurdy’s sG model which takes multiple seasons into account really likes the player. This is far from rigorous analysis but on the surface Ville clearly seems to be a top 6 calibre NHL defenceman.
Starting from the beginning of last year, here’s Ville Heinola’s single game expected goal shares:
77.34%
3.53%

13.99%
69.08%
35.35%
17.29%
24.92%

63.2%
73.36%

56.65%
26.23%
33.61%
66.37%
81.03%
43.95%
75.85%
Overall: 53.3% with mostly bad D partners.
At the end of the day despite scoring more this year Logan Stanley was still not a good overall defenceman, and Luke Schenn was very bad. Rosen is a solid dart throw, and the 2nd and 4th round picks carry more value than a player you can easily get an improvement on via waivers. Chevy did well here.
The only debate about Helle now is where he ranks among the greatest goalies of all time.
What a scam
Regardless of result Canada is so far and away the better team, it isn’t close. Helle at his best though is the most impactful player on the planet.
NOT CALLING PENALTIES TO NOT HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE GAME = HAVING AN EFFECT ON THE GAME!
What the actual fuck refs this whole game is a scam
Get Mason Appleton out of Nathan MacKinnon’s jersey please
Hellebuyck are you kidding me?
Best timing with this hahah
Such a panic play by Tom Wilson. Yikes.
So when do the officials call the exact penalty they called on the Canadians against the Americans? They’ve done it 3 times now with no call.
Changing the line combos here is so misguided for Canada. They were the better team until the penalty.
I can only hope to be so good at something they’re still giving me credit for how good I was at that thing 10 years ago.
lol no, hockey people are just not efficient decision makers.
Team Canada starting literally the worst statistical goalie in the NHL this year instead of a statistical top 3 goalie is an incredible choice.
That’s a big signing, and if Ceresna can find his pre-injury form the Bombers’ o-line and d-line both just got a lot better.
They better not make the same mistake with Salomonsson and Yager. I believe they’ve already have with Lambert and Chibrikov. Would either of them hit with consistent NHL development? Maybe, maybe not. Would the team have been worse? Unlikely given that Kupari and Tanev got regular minutes last year.
Obviously development doesn’t work that way. AHL development can probably push a player to be marginally NHL level, but no further. The thing with Ville is he’s been at a marginal NHL level since he’s been 18. That was a golden opportunity to develop a player on a team without other good options.
It’s almost like when they draft a skilled player, they have a projection for the player to be a top 6 F/top 4 D, and if the player isn’t immediately at that level upon being called up, the Jets go “we’ll send him to the Moose until he’s at that level.”
Re: the Heinola piece, the damage done and mistakes made with respect to Ville were years ago. I truly think they had Ville in their plans up until the broken ankle, but I think the issue is and always has been they have a warped perception of what an NHL ready prospect should look like.
Logan Stanley is scoring, but his overall game is still not good at all. This is a glorious sell high opportunity for the Jets.
Trust me if I was grumpy my last post would have been a lot more recent than 26 days ago lol
The season is over and the only thing they should be focusing on is setting themselves up for next year and the year after. That means playing all pf the youth even if they suck (they might be good or improve). Losing doesn’t matter at this point. Improving youth and adding to youth really matters.
The Jets signed players and prioritized players who are/were not good players. It makes sense that this team isn’t good. People say the roster isn’t *that* different but they added 5 new players since a year ago today and 3 of those players are very bad. That’s a significant amount of bad.
I’m not heartbroken about the Jets being in last place. They lost their best forward and didn’t make a real attempt to replace him. I also don’t think a replacement existed. In a way this is kind of a best scenario for the team going forward. They may have a chance to draft a star this summer.
They could also stunt the growth of these players if they played in the NHL, unlike the tried and true formula of developing them in the AHL as proven by the plethora of players they’ve developed over the last decade!
