Front page of Royal Historical Society blog post with image of the Berlin Holocaust Memorial, photograph by Rudolph Simon, 2013, Wilkimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0.

Text reads: "On Holocaust Memorial Day we need more history, not just more memory' and abstract: In this post, Andy Pearce – Director of the Centre for Holocaust Education at UCL – considers the current levels of knowledge of the Holocaust among UK secondary school students. UCL studies, in 2016 and 2026, reveal a troubling and enduring divergence between popular understandings of the persecution and murder of Jews in Europe, in the 1930s and 1940s, and the findings of scholarly historical research. 27 January 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of Holocaust Memorial Day in Britain. As Andy argues, prevalent and popular misperceptions risk being sustained if the Holocaust becomes a subject for remembrance and memory, rather than of history and historical scholarship. It is only though β€˜more history’, shared widely and publicly, that we may seek to redress error, distortion and denial."

Misconceptions about the Holocaust persist among England's teenagers Students’ core knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust remains insecure, with many struggling to answer basic questions about what happened, to whom, where and when, finds new research from the U...

New research from @uclholocaust.bsky.social shows misconceptions about the Holocaust still persist among teens – though understanding has improved since 2016.

This provides compelling evidence to call for wider change and a national conversation on Holocaust education.

It was an honour in my dual capacity to hear again from Eva Clarke BEM @uclholocaust.bsky.social as we gathered in person/online to mark #HMD.
Our RWBA relationship with Eva is a longstanding one (as pictured), both a first & sec gen survivor - she is the embodiment of bridging generations.

The case for clearer Holocaust curriculum guidance Teaching about the Holocaust is not easy, and the evidence suggests teachers need more support

'Clearly, Holocaust education in schools is essential, especially in the current era of misinformation and disinformation. However, we now have compelling evidence that shows we need to revisit how and why the Holocaust is taught'

How to teach about the Holocaust in the digital age To address the risk of children encountering misinformation online, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance has updated its recommendations for teaching and learning about the Holocaust

As young people encounter misinformation on and offline, how should we teach about the Holocaust?

1. Focusing on digital literacy
2. Explicitly teaching about antisemitism
