And what's brought this on? I'm exploding with thoughts and feelings about a certain hockey-related TV show and I've got nowhere to discuss them ....

Once upon a time I was an expert in museum visitor experiences. Then I took a 10-year detour into management. Now I'm a semi-retired consultant. Probably neurodivergent. Definitely curious about lots of things.

That engagement and interaction is gone because I no longer am fluent in the right language.
Now I scroll Instagram and TikTok, but I'm relegated to a passive consumer. Words are my safe medium - I'm a terrible photographer and there's no way I'm going to be creating videos.
I'm missing my old Twitter network. Here isn't the same - not enough followers so my posts just go into the void.

Underpants Gnomes, organisational structures and value: EVRNN Book Club WeekΒ 2
This week we discussed Chapters 1-2 of Falkβs book, Leaning into Value, which seemed to raise more questions than answers! Hereβs my takeaways: Value is defined by the user / visitor, rather than the organisation,β¦
I went to AGNSW yesterday to see the Archibald/Wynne/Suliman prizes. It was PACKED. My abiding memory is not any art, but fighting to see anything at all (not easy when you're 155cm).
It was a public holiday so that bit's on me, but it honestly never occurred to me it would be THAT busy.
Have been in Sydney for the last few days, my first time in several years. I have realised I am NOT big-city fit. Just existing among such crowds is really stressful.
WTAF?
So lies and hate are just fine, but cyclone information breaches community standards. Righto, meta
Just watched Twelve Angry Men for the first time. Although it's fictional, I take a lot from how humility, dignity and careful questioning can win people over.
"They think it's a meritocracy when it's a mirror-tocracy" - mic drop quote from Kara Swisher #adlww
RM: Colleen Taylor was the perfect public servant and did everything she could to sound the alarm. If you're ever wondering what you should do as a public servant, ask yourself what would Colleen do.

RM: by definition you couldn't get a Robodebt if you didn't work. He rejects the characterisation of deserving vs undeserving, but these people weren't "job snobs" they were the "have a go get a go" people
#adlww
RM: the notorious 2014 budget created the conditions for Robodebt - huge pressure to find additional savings in the 2015 financial year.

RM: Our culture has a pervasive suspicion that someone is getting something they don't deserve. The scrutiny tends to go on the poor and disadvantaged rather than the rich and privileged.

Some people didn't even know they had a debt until other government income (eg tax return, family tax benefits) were garnished.
Reverse onus of proof means people had to prove they didn't owe the money.
Govt often already had the evidence in their files, but didn't use it.

RM: story of Rhys Cauzzo. Was 'just a kid' living in Melbourne. He ended up getting chased by private debt collectors and died by suicide.
Another woman trying to get into rehab slid back into heroin addiction and died of an overdose.

RM: came late to covering the Robodebt story, for a number of reasons.
But he has always had a fascination with bureaucratic absurdity in literature: Kafka, Catch-22, Douglas Adams.

Rick Morton - now a "Robodebt historian" on his book Mean Streak. A detailed, harrowing but also sometimes darkly funny read. #adlww
Waiting for @squigglyrick.bsky.social to speak about Robodebt at Adelaide Writers' Week, reminiscing about the days when live tweeting #ADLWW was a thing.
Is #icanhasPDF a thing on Bluesky?
In early 2015, almost by accident, I landed my first management role. Reflecting on my experiences, some ten years and three positions later, I've learned a lot and have few regrets. But it hasn't always been an easy road.
(More in my LI post)
One time I said something was "heaps far" to some people in the UK. Cue incredulous ridicule.
Home alone this Christmas (not in a Macauley Culkin way but because I have a bug and didn't want to spread it). Got a lot of Netflix in
Also ten years since this classic
All good π
Stick around people who treat you like shit for long enough, you'll start to believe they are right.
