I don’t have a #Renounce hat! I have a #Resist hat. I think we need to renounce & RESIST! I like it because people of #Portland choose a #FROG as mascot for the #Resistance. Catherinanne tells me FROG is #FullyRelyOnGod. I can do that - AND - affirm that God is relying on us to renounce & resist.
Read @dianabutlerbass.bsky.social musings today. Evil and darkness are evidenced in mass deportations, masked agents, unsanctioned unilateral acts of war, in the lust to make the wealthiest people in the West even wealthier. We are a people called to #Renounce.
In baptism we’re asked
Do you #Renounce;
- Satan & the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God?
- Evil powers of this world which corrupt & destroy the creatures of God?
- Sinful desires that draw you from the love of God?

Baptism certainly calls me to kindness, patience, faithfulness & self control - Yes AND Diana reminded me, baptism is also about being willing to #Renounce!
In Galatians we are told that the fruits of the spirit include: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control. I would say if I could increase any of these in my own journey, I’d be better managing the darkness of these early days of 2026.
Today’s celebration at #StPaulsCathedral was heartening. Early days of 2026 have been a challenge — huge understatement! Being reminded by Sam to be be a people who ‘bear fruit worthy of repentance’ was a gift. It’s one thing to confess, it’s another to make change that leads to a new way of living.
Dorothy Day said, “I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least.” Hard part - I agree. These words haunt me. In these deeply divided days, it’s hard to love those who are so callously hurting so many. God help me understand what loving the most difficult people looks like?
Soren Kierkegaard wrote, “The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.” This is great motivation for me to pray. As a deeply flawed human being, I am ever conscious of the need for constant change, renewal and conversion. #LetUsPray

Midweek, we open the Scriptures together. Each Wed @ 11:00 am, St. Paul’s Cathedral hosts a Bible Study led by Ven Sam Thomas — a calm, welcoming space to engage Scripture thoughtfully & faithfully. The morning continues with Holy Communion @ 12:15 pm, followed by soup & fellowship.

Join us at 7 pm. There will be candlelight, music, meaning-making and prayer. This is an open and affirming space. There will be opportunity to remember your loved one in a tangible manner, with a keepsake to take away.
In the midst of the lights, & the merrymaking that goes along with Christmas, many face unimaginable grief as they confront untold pressure to try to meet unrealistic cultural standards. St. Paul's Cathedral is making room for people to gather in their grief - a quiet, affirming, prayerful place
