Chart showing in many countries, people see their fellow citizens as morally good.

We asked people around the world to rate the morality and ethics of others in their country.

The U.S. is the only place we surveyed where more adults describe the morality and ethics of others living in the country as bad than good. See our full morality report here: www.pewresearch.org/...

Remember! Applied and Environmental Microbiology solicits minireviews. And they are free to publish!

There's 2 more I want to write. Time in my career to summarize and rant.

In my upper level class, we read a lot of primary literature since microbial ecology is moving so fast and the textbooks can't keep up.
Today I had the primary author of a paper join - I didn't tell the students - and they were shocked! It was so fun! I love when students can see authors as people.

Jacob is defending his thesis later this month, and gotta say, there's nothing like going in with chapters already published!

Also props to our reviewers, you improved this and were super helpful!

This is also a product of our dept writing class! W's all around.

Viruses in marine sediments: a review of their effect on biogeochemistry and microbial interactions | Applied and Environmental Microbiology In the ocean, viruses are known to mediate the carbon cycle, keeping dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the microbial loop and preventing its movement into secondary consumers (1). However, few direct ...

New paper out! We sat down and compiled all viral work in marine sediments. The water column has been getting a second look for viral interactions, its time for sediment to have the same!

It's not that AI is useless.

It's that AI is useful like asbestos was useful.

Good news: Scientists were wrong about how bad sea level rise is.

Bad news: It’s even worse than we thought.

My son is in JROTC. They’ve been told they cannot wear uniforms in public anymore.

All reaction to Iran. Kudos for protecting my kid but also what lesson are we teaching now? Run scared after you do war crimes?

What Trump’s America Looks Like From China That life is better in the U.S. is no longer an article of faith.

"She compared living in the U.S. to visiting a theme park: mesmerizing for a child, but less appealing a decade later."

With Eugene Koonin, we propose a concept of β€œthe selfish ribosome”, under which evolution of life is viewed as a ribosomal takeover, where the ribosome evolved to consume most of the cell’s resources, while other cellular componentry ensures the propagation of the ribosome. arxiv.org/abs/2602.23268

Sometimes things happen in your career where the past events of sexism and neglect that you’ve experienced get ripped wide open. I should write a fucking book.

My neighbor left the federal government to take the director of marine ops position at my campus. And they are going to starve UNOLS out of existence now. NSF and Navy were the biggest clients.

This is the directorate that funds all of the earth, ocean & atmosphere research at NSF.

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers.

The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡
