Thin pages are made of a fine pulp. Thick pages are lower quality and made of a larger pulp.
Look at a mass market paperback's paper. Thick pulp.
You may enjoy the feel of cheaper thick paper, but fine pulp is a better quality object.

You can find well made books today, but they will cost you. Try ordering one of your favorite books from The Folio Society. They are both beautiful and well made...
And they cost $60 to $100.
Worth it!
Anything over 500 or 600 pages is SO thick that a modern binding has a hard time of it. You'll find similar damage in Stephen King, Robert Jordan, or Tom Clancy books. Older books were built better, and were much more expensive. Modern books on average last 20 yrs.
Pre-WWII books? Hundreds.
