Viewpoint: Is bloodied Syrian boy Omran Daqneesh just another image?
The image of a bloodied Syrian boy in an ambulance should not be just a hashtag or viral moment: it must become a movement to end the war, argues Lina Sergie Attar.
You know how sometimes a memory arrives perfectly formed in your mind? Every few months I remember this photograph in almost exact detail, usually if my own children pull a similar expression. And I wonder if he is alive.

UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns
Prof Tim Lang says country produces far less food than it needs to feed population and is particularly vulnerable
I can sort of understand people treating climate breakdown as a distant, peripheral issue when they thought it was just a future threat to polar bears and Pacific Islands
But we're seeing these sorts of warnings all the time now, and little seems to have changed

How Englandβs outdated water tracking system leaves regulators in the dark
Experts warn accurately monitoring consumption by bulk users such as farmers, datacentres and businesses can be all but impossible
At the same time water supplies are stretched in England, farmers are finding they need to use more water, agricultural use in England more than doubling in the past 5 years, as Watershed's Rachel Salvidge revealed last year:

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

A muddy berm being planted with a new hedge to hold it all together.
An old gappy hedgerow with large old hazel and lots of new saplings planted and guarded.
Despite 20+ people not bothering to show up or even cancel, we got a lot hedging planted today. One of them was a kid, who smashed it. A family of three rocked up at 3pm to pitch in after seeing our cries for help on local Facebook groups. 1,000 more to plant another time, now off to the next job.

Exclusive: UCL scientists find large swathes of southern Europe are drying up, with βfar-reachingβ implications

The law concerning the legality of a given war and the laws governing the practice of war are separate. There is a good reason for this. Even if the war itself is illegal, the combatants still have to obey the laws of war.

Theyβre not a byproduct. Those things specifically manufactured to a purpose and the environmental cost of manufacture is quite staggering.
And somehow invisible. Letβs look at alternatives
