The language of white supremacy:
- "I don't see colour"
- "the benefits of western civilization"
- "anti-woke"
- "reverse racism"
- "We live in a meritocracy"
- "Please keep the conversation civil"
- "professionalism"
- "Where are you (really) from?"
Reading a good book under my heavy blankets ππππ
A standard language does not exist before a standard language ideology.
For an allegedly linguistic category, "native English speaker" sure is understood in terms of race and nationality.
Less accent modification, more listener education
I made a short list of books that most challenge myths about about gender and sex for @shepherdbooks.bsky.social. Check it out: shepherd.com/best-books/c...
Yes, βEnglishesβ is a word. And yes, there is a wide range of Englishes.
That sounds super interesting! How is your writing process going? What stage would you say youβre at?
Unless my brain is donezo--a real possibility--I think everything I published this year was publishing advice in the Chronicle--6 columns in 2024, 8 total. Next one on how to write a kickass response to reader reports. (The big C in the thumbnail is for Colesworthy) www.chronicle.com/author/rebec...
This is very helpful! Thanks so much for your input. What subject matter do you tend to enjoy, thatβs in the non-fiction genre?
Ahhh! I didnβt even know this was a riddle. ππ love this response!
Thank you!! π
What makes an βunputdownableβ non-fiction book?

Is there a way to bookmark posts on BlueSky??
A lot of native speakers of English use 'to lay' instead of 'to lie':
'I'm laying here.'
This isn't a recent thing:
it started in the 14th century.
Several sister languages of English, such as Frisian and Afrikaans, even merged the verbs for "to lie" and "to lay" completely.

You know the audiobook is good when you start finding more things to clean or organize around the house just so you can keep listening a bit longerβ¦

Hello, #booksky! Iβm really enjoying βJamesβ. Itβs the first fiction book Iβve read this year. Iβve been reading a lot of non-fiction, and this is a welcome change. Any book you think is a *must read* that you recommend I finish before the year ends?!π€πΎππΎ #books #booklover #booknerd
I love this!!! ππ₯°β€οΈ
The opening to The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney βI warn you that what you're starting to read is full of loose ends and unanswered questions. It will not be neatly tied up at the end, everything resolved and satisfactorily explained. Not by me it won't, anyway. Because I can't say I really know exactly what happened, or why, or just how it began, how it ended, or if it has ended; and I've been right in the thick of it. Now if you don't like that kind of story, I'm sorry, and you'd better not read it. All I can do is tell what I know.β
How Iβm writing up studies from here on out
Iβm so excited about this book project. Canβt wait to share more about it in the near future! π€πΎβπΎππΊοΈ
