One of the points that gets missed by this argument is that no one is really asking you to be convincing. Just describe a social tactic that *could be* convincing. Enough to invoke some game mechanics, which can then inform the details of the exchange. "I try to flatter him" is enough to work with!

I agree that "rules elide" is not a terribly compelling argument, but there I think there *is* a differentiation between game mechanics and play experience that can be difficult to appreciate.
I guess specifically what I mean is that "storygame" meaning "culture where story is mediated by system mechanics" and not "culture where the primary goal is to experience a particular story" is throwing people.
In some ways systems are there to facilitate aspects of play that players don't care to invest their creative energy in but which are still perceived as necessary to progress the experience of play.
I think one of the reasons that game/culture assignments are unintuitive (e.g. your vampire post) is that game aspects codified by the rules and game aspects important to players are often opposite.
