The title of my book, "Between Families and Institutions: Mental Health and Biopolitical Paternalism in Contemporary China" is set against artwork made by Hong Kong artist Sophie Hing-Yee Cheung. It depicts the park near her childhood home where she retreated to vent her emotions. In the center, the trees are recreated in vivid purple, and the white, negative spaces are the lamps and spotlights of the park. Surrounding the central square is an image of an old newspaper with ink erased, representing the color of those remembered plants at night.

My book is coming out in May! It examines families’ complex involvement in China’s mental health services, analyzing its implications on the country’s politics of governance and ethics of care. Pre-order with code E25ZHYMA to get 30% off: www.dukeupress.edu/between-fami.... @dukepress.bsky.social
