V Force wasn't just regular soldiers. It relied on the bravery of local hill tribesβthe Naga,Chin&Lushai people, or people like the anthropologist Ursula Graham Bower. Their knowledge of the geography of the Burma/India frontier was the ultimate weapon against invasion. #NagaHills #BurmaWar #VForce

Whatβs with all the DSOs?
Background This is a bit of a bitter entry about who got Distinguished Service Orders (the second-highest Commonwealth decoration after the Victoria and George Cross) in the first round of decoratiβ¦
On 20 February 1942 two of the victorious commanders of Operation CRUSADER were recognised by the award of Bars to their Distinguished Service Orders, Brigadiers Willison, who had effectively commanded the Tobruk breakout, and Watkins, who was in command of 1 Army Tank Brigade under 13 Corps.

Well once they realised the trenches were going to be something they occupied for a while, the spike went in the ground to hold it steady and the headspace was filled with...
...which was chucked over the parapet afterwards.

Indeed - extraordinary situations produce the extraordinary in people who (mostly) remain humble and modest afterwards. Not all of them get decorated for it either, and that doesn't matter. It is known by the people who do matter.

Everything finally becomes 'of its time' I suppose, but that is what makes things alluring too. They were big enough to be made into a tv series in the 1970s.
The Archers is still going: Broadcast since 1951 as "an everyday story of country folk" now as "a contemporary drama in a rural setting".
