The past weekend marked the end of Black History Month. 100 years after it first launched, this February has put front and center how the fight for voting rights is unfinished business for communities across the U.S., particularly for Black Americans.
The Trump admin is demanding more states’ voter rolls — sensitive data they know election deniers will weaponize to undermine trust in our elections.
This isn’t about strengthening our elections, it’s about laying the groundwork to undermine results they don’t like.
The SAVE Act wouldn’t just disenfranchise millions of voters, it would also complicate things for the local election officials that keep our democracy running.
We need to be giving them support, not adding more hurdles to their work.
Last night’s State of the Union address was exactly what we expected: more lies and distraction to hide the truth about attempts to keep Americans from voting and eligible votes from being counted to change the results of the midterm elections and beyond.
Americans expect every voter to have the opportunity to vote. Election officials have historically depended on federal resources and cooperation to achieve this.

Ida B. Wells challenged racism within the women’s suffrage movement, and advocated for voting rights an essential tool for Black women to protect their communities and secure justice.
Fannie Lou Hamer became one of the most powerful voices of the voting rights movement, demanding a democracy that included Black voters.
John Lewis spent his life fighting for the right to vote, and was the youngest speaker and organizer of the March on Washington.
This Black History Month, we honor the voting rights champions like John Lewis, Ida B. Wells, Fannie Lou Hamer, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King Jr., who risked everything to protect the freedom to vote.
This is what saying the quiet part out loud looks like.
Democracy means everyone who’s eligible gets a voice, not just the people politicians think will vote for them.
We mourn the loss of Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights titan who spent his life fighting for justice and a democracy that includes us all.
We’ll honor his legacy by continuing the fight to make that vision real.
