A lot of people don't know this about me but I actually invented the concept of "posting" on "the internet"

I think for me it’s partly about the constant elaborate performances of masculinity that don’t quite fit. Saul is a performance. He’s a hypermasculated performance, even. The loud suits, the aggressive confidence, the sleazy womanizing persona, the constant jokes about his ex-wives. Saul is Jimmy doing a bit about what a certain kind of man is supposed to be. “Saul” is a dysphoria hoodie. The show keeps offering Jimmy templates for How To Be A Man. Chuck’s version is prestigious, respectable, rule-following, cold, Howard’s version is slick, professional, and warm, arguably actually emotionally healthy and yet Jimmy HATES IT. The criminal world’s version is tough, transactional, then Saul as hustler masculinity, the showman, the guy who’s always “on” And Jimmy keeps trying them on. None of them fit. But he keeps reaching for the next one because what’s the alternative? The Saul suits are loud and excessive in a way that reads as compensation, like he’s trying to fill space, to be undeniably something even if that something is a cartoon.

Also there’s the name thing. Jimmy has SO MANY names. James Morgan McGill. Jimmy. Slippin’ Jimmy. Saul Goodman. Gene Takavic. Viktor St. Claire. None of them quite fit!! The show treats “what is your real name” as genuinely unanswerable which is FASCINATING to me. (You can just be a girl Jimmy!!!) I’m also fascinated with how Jimmy is constantly being told he doesn’t belong. He can pass the bar, he can wear the suits, he can do the job, but Chuck, the bar, the legal establishment keep telling him he’s not really one of them. He didn’t go to the right school. He doesn’t have the right background. He’s faking it!!! There’s something very “you’ll never be a real [x]” about the way the show’s institutional gatekeepers treat him. He meets every formal requirement and it’s never enough because they can clock something essential about him that disqualifies him. And then when Jimmy DOES get institutional approval (Davis & Main) he hates it! So much of the show is about wanting to be yourself and finding out who that is. The question the show keeps asking is: what would a space that’s actually for Jimmy look like? And I simply think she should take HRT about it.

Also as someone in my replies pointed out there’s that one scene where Jimmy and Kim have sex where Jimmy pretends to be Kim the whole time and Kim pretends to be her male boss. And it was Jimmy’s idea! He wanted to embody Being The Girlfriend in an intimate context!!! VINCE WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THIS
