Why does being awake and alive, being yourself, feel like anything at all, and where does this singular sense of awareness come from in the brain?

A formal, black-and-white portrait photograph of Marjory Stephenson, a British biochemist and one of the first two female Fellows of the Royal Society, taken in April 1945. The image shows Stephenson seated and turned slightly to the viewer's left, looking directly at the camera. She wears dark, round-rimmed glasses, a black dress, and a strand of pearls. Her hair is styled back off her face. The portrait uses soft lighting and a blurred background, common to the photographic style of the time. The photo was taken by Walter Stoneman for the National Portrait Gallery.
Marjory Stephenson was born #OTD in 1885
+ Helped establish modern microbial biochemistry

๐ too funny not to share, we need a cat catching an invisible spider
I had many awkward questions and comments as have a long career, maybe: can you make your voice less high pitch? after a keynote presentation
This is one for all the #WomeninSTEM. If you are happy to, could you share some of the more awkward and unusual questions you have been asked? The ones your male colleagues would never be asked.
I'm running an event @helmholtz.de with the awesome Michelle Browne for #IDWAGIS
Professional portrait of atmospheric scientist Susan Solomon. She has short, tousled gray hair, wears large round dark-framed glasses, and is smiling gently. She is dressed in a textured navy-blue blazer over a black top, with a bright multicolored floral/paisley scarf tied at the neck. Her arms are crossed confidently in front of her chest. She wears a silver watch on her left wrist. The background shows a softly blurred indoor space with warm architectural tones.
Atmospheric chemist Susan Solomon was born #OTD in 1956.
Solomon, working with colleagues at NOAA, proposed/confirmed the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole, chlorofluorocarbons. She led the Nat'l Ozone Expedition to Antarctica to collect evidence & was the only woman on the team. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)

Interesting, in my lab we measure near 1000 lipids in blood CSF brain, & we have found that many fats are needed for a healthy brain. Plenty genes that are risk of dementia make proteins that need to interact with fats, to me it makes sense
