On the wall in her living room she posted big pieces of paper with the questions she asked the councilmembers. The posters were chock full of stickers, representing neighbors defended and supported. That was TWO MONTHS ago, and we’ve STILL got electeds handwringing about sustainable solutions.
This is my friend. About two months ago she had ~50 people over to discuss our coalition’s response so far and going forward. Who was leading, who was listening, who was doing what, who was ready to jump in.

Dear neighbor, I am proud of you and our immigrant residents. Your resiliency, strength, and dedication have led to the announcement that “Operation Metro Surge” will end soon. It’s clear that the commitment of our neighbors made it untenable for ICE and federal agents to continue to operate its occupation of our city and state. This isn’t as a result of capitulation from elected leaders. This victory is yours, but we must not stop until ICE is completely abolished, and no more families are ever separated again. I will forever be thankful to those who patrolled, observed, and supported our community with mutual aid and daily tasks during these horrific times. Our community is full of heroes who will always be remembered as caring and loving. There are no words to show how thankful I am of every single one of you who showed up day in and day out. They said they are not backing down from mass deportation but will be ending the operation in Minnesota soon. I recommend you continue your current plan until we can give you more information. We still need observers and the community to be on the lookout. These “draw-downs” are expected to continue through next week, which means we will still need help now and in the future. Additionally, we must never forget what they did to our neighbors and loved ones. They murdered Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg, and kidnapped Victor Manuel Diaz, who then died under ICE custody. We are still mourning, demanding justice, and we will never forget. They targeted our immigrant neighbors and children, discriminated against our community based on skin color and accents, lobbed weapons of war on our parks, and completely shattered families who simply wanted to work, take their kids to schools, and

We hope that you will explicitly commit to publicly demanding or executing the following: ICE must leave Minnesota now. ICE must end similar surge operations and commit to never using this un-American tactic in communities across our country again. Any officer who kills a civilian must be held legally accountable. That starts with legitimate investigations and charges by local officials.
Shut down ICE. Lobby Congress for no additional federal funding for ICE in the upcoming Congressional budget and ICE should be investigated for human and Constitutional violations of Americans and our neighbors. Cease economic relations with ICE and refuse ICE entry or use of company property for staging grounds.

The time has come where the DFL can no longer pretend that things are business as usual. @dfl.org @rcarlbom.bsky.social it’s time to pivot to contactless caucuses to protect our precinct caucus attendees and volunteers from harm at the hands of ICE.

But, city video footage is not typically kept for more than 10-14 days. That means we have already lost a lot of evidence of crimes perpetrated by ICE.

Attorneys tell us that one of the most important tools they have, both for defense of those detained and potential prosecution of officers, is video. They need as much from as many different angles as possible.
The city has a lot - at least 212 city-owned street cameras, which is public data.
