Confronting individuals with printed screenshots of their private messages is a documented tactic currently used to suppress freedom of expression and squeeze civic space.
#Libyaβs human rights defenders are facing an increasingly dangerous reality as their private digital spaces are weaponised against them. What should be a secure channel for communication is being monitored by the Internal Security Agency (ISA) and used as a tool for interrogation and intimidation.
Help us continue this important work. We are raising Β£15,000 by 15 April, and every donation you make will be doubled by a generous supporter if we reach this target.

As our series continues, we share reflections that speak to the core of our work.
Todayβs letter is from Asma Khalifa, on LFJLβs role as a steady voice for human rights in Libya, and its continued commitment to HRDs on the ground, even during the most difficult crackdowns.
Justice is a collective journey. As we celebrate 15 years of LFJL throughout 2026, we are looking back at the partnerships that have defined our work and the people who have stood by us.
Todayβs letter comes from our partner, Ahmed Alzaydani.

Since its launch 5 years ago, the Ali Nouh Fund has provided a lifeline for dozens human rights defenders, enabling them to continue their work in safety & dignity. Our Annual Review highlights how this sustained engagement remains a source of hope for Libyaβs transition to peace and the rule of law
βStrengthening the safety of human rights defenders, especially when they face risks as a result of the work we do together is both an ethical obligation and essential to build a movement for change.β - Elham Saudi, LFJL Executive Director.
Our commitment to those on the frontlines remains as strong today as it was 15 years ago.

We are marking this double anniversary by honoring their resilience with the release of the Ali Nouh Fund Annual Review. The fund provides the essential, holistic support needed for #defenders at risk to live in safety and continue their work toward transformative #change.
Despite the crackdown on civic space, #human_rights defenders continue to adapt, coordinate, and demand the #justice and #dignity that the 2011 uprising first called for.
Fifteen years since the 17 February uprising. Fifteen years of Lawyers for Justice in #Libya (#LFJL). While the path to transition remains blocked by political fragmentation and impunity, one thing is clear: Libyaβs #civil_society isnβt backing down.

βThere was so much hope in 2011 when we heard that the ICC had issued a warrant for Saifβs arrest. This promise of justice & accountability felt within reach. His killing, 15 years later shows that this promise remains an aspirationβ

We urge the #ASP to take decisive action following this referral and call on States to fully cooperate with the ICC. Cooperation is the backbone of international justice; without it, the safety of victims and their access to justice are directly compromised.
By releasing Najim and returning him to #Libya despite an arrest warrant, #Italy not only breached it's legal obligation but also undermined victimsβ access to justice and left them in a state of continued risk.
