We are Authors Against Book Bans. We stand united against the deeply unconstitutional movement to limit the freedom to read. We unequivocally support diverse voices on our library shelves, in our schools, and in our culture. www.authorsagainstbookbans.com
Let's head into the weekend with some good news out of Wyoming! Legislatures around the country are learning that book bans are losing policy
My take away from this story: Not only do the majority of people want open & accessible libraries, many people will also put in the work to make it happen
CALL YOUR REPS & tell them NO banning books. Period. Ever. This bill will remove ALL trans content from public libraries in the name of keeping kids "safe" from every having to know we exist. Another part of this regime's push to kill all trans people by criminalizing our existence.
Script if you need it:
Iβm calling to tell Representative ____ to oppose H.R. 7661. This bill would pressure schools to remove titles that discuss lived experiences that some politicians find controversial. I donβt think trans people are controversial. (contin)
The States supporting Florida's attempt to censor libraries: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, & West Virginia.
If not, support the Florida Freedom to Read Project. They are doing a ton of incredible and difficult work on the ground...
21 states of filed amicus briefs in support of the law, so if the court allows it, we will see a wave of bills just like it, looking to completely stifle the freedom of public libraries. So what can you do about it. If you live in one of those states (threaded below) START PREPARING A FIGHT...
This past August, court's overturned Florida's disastrous HB1069. Not only is the decision being appealed, but the argument the state is making, that all books in a public library should be considered "government speech" & thus not subject to 1st amendment protections, would make things worse...
On March 10th, AABB, together with the Mass Freedom to Read Coalition, is hosting a Mass Freedom to Read Advocacy Day at the State House and online. That's 1 week from today!
We invite you to participate virtually by...
This is truly the crux of it. Itβs not about shielding kids or promoting βtraditional valuesβ β itβs about straight up removing options, and the ability to imagine, from their worldview
Book banners are trying to create a world in which no one is able to imagine living lives different from their own
Thanks for the heads up!
New Yorkers! Have you contacted your governor today!?!?!?
Contact your representative in the House and ask them to oppose the bill AND if the bill is likely to pass anyway, to support an amendment that would require a unanimous vote for removal making it harder to use the law for ideological purposes.
Hey Alabama! A bill passed in your Senate would make it easier for city councils to remove library board members. They'll argue about budgets & accountability, but we know where this going...
For booksellers, the ABA created this form to make it easy to contact your Rep about this terrible bill. www.bookweb.org/advocacy-act...
A digital drawing of author Maia Kobabe, a white nonbinary person with short brown hair wearing a patterned blue shirt, who scowls while holding up a copy of eir book GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR. Maia is saying: H.R. 7661 is a national book banning bill which seeks to remove any book that "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism" from all public schools in the US. This would ban my books, and any other book with trans themes, from public schools. PLEASE call your House Reps and say: NO ON H.R. 7661!

As hard as we are fighting, book bans are having an impact on the books being written and published. To put this another way, a very small number of well-funded people who don't write books, don't teach books, don't work in libraries are trying to decide what books are available for everyone else
To the people who have said this bill has no chance of passing: it is moving to committee!
I DO NOT care if you think itβs impossible to pass! I live in a state where a law like this DID PASS! DONβT BE COMPLACENT AND CALL!!!
URGENT call to those in USA.
1) Look if any of these are your reps.
2) Choose from the talking points on the slide below this one, to tell them to vote NO - and you feel very strongly about this - for HR 7661.

If you'd like to use these slides, especially if you can connect with other folks in these districts the files are here. If every person who calls their reps about this ALSO gets one other person to call and that person ALSO gets one other person to call & so on, well, that's collective action.
a blue graphic with red and white text that reads: If you are represented by the congresspeople listed above: Call your reps. Tell them they must oppose this bill at every turn. It is egregiously unconstitutional, targets ideas based on ideological disapproval, and misleads parents and the public about the content of children's books. It does nothing to protect kids and will badly harm education. It will tie school material funding into knots and hurt anyone who is a library materials vendor, regardless of content. If you are a bookseller, librarian, or author, tell them your livelihood depends on the next generation of readers.
The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce. If you are represented by one of the members of this committee listed below, they need to hear from you. Rep. Kevin Kiley, California (CA-3) (Chair) - entering vulnerable election cycle; Rep. Mary E. Miller, Illinois (Vice Chair); Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, Pennsylvania; Rep. Burgess Owens, Utah; Rep. Michael A. Rulli, Ohio; Rep. James C. Moylan, Guam - entering vulnerable election cycle; Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, Pennsylvania - entering vulnerable election cycle; Rep. Mark Harris, North Carolina; Rep. Mark B. Messmer, Indiana Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Oregon, Ranking Member; Rep. Jahana Hayes, Connecticut Rep. Summer L. Lee, Pennsylvania; Rep. John W. Mannion, New York; Rep. Frederica S. Wilson, Florida; Rep. Alma S. Adams, North Carolina; Rep. Adelita Grijalva, AZ
a blue and red graphic with white text that reads: House Republicans have introduced a bill to effectively grant the federal government decision-making power over what books make it into the library. Misleadingly called the "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act," H.R. 7661 is a national-level book banning bill that would ban any book that, according to the bill's language, "(ii) involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism." This means any book about a trans person or the trans experience would be banned from every public school in the United States.
blue graphic with an outline of the United States. Red and white text reads: Call. National Book Banning Bill Proposed in US House of Reps. Tell your rep: Vote no on H.R. 7661.
We've had a day to pull a few things together, so here's a thread some more targeted info opposing the potential national book ban just proposed in the House of Representatives.
A nationwide book ban bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives. Here's what you need to know about HR7661, including who is behind it, the history behind such bills, and what you need to do to stop it.

"These bills arenβt about removing books; books are just one of the tools. These bills are about the complete and total erasure and removal of queer people from American life."

Would we rather not have to spend our time on these fights? Of course! But every fight is also an opportunity, not just to score a win, but to create resources, build solidarity, and (even if we lose) develop the materials we'll use to build a better world in the future. So let your reps have it!
Finally, national policy tends to get the headlines, so this creates an opportunity for LOCAL organizing. The classic, "Wow, wouldn't a national book ban be terrible? You know, you can protect the right to read in your town/county/state? Here's how!"...
